Come on out here where we camp. Nothing, no water (lake or pond) to playing, just sand and hills. If you didn't bring it, you just don't have it. I've yet to be at a camp ground or have my 5'er hooked up to shore utilitiesl. The batts, gen, water tank and holding tanks must do the job. Heck, it is the Holiday Inn on wheels. And we call this camping,,, What a hoot!

Agree with Lynnvt -- boondocks are commonly thought of as back woods, the sticks or the jungles.

These days, I believe RVers would consider this definition for boondocking: parking the rig for a short stay, for free, in an out of the way place. The operative word in the definition is FREE; Boondockers dock in the boonies or in the jungle for free. This could also be the asphalt jungle like Wal-Mart or a casino parking lot.

Just my $.02 worth.

Boondocking...situating the RV in any location where satellite TV reception is substandard.

From my DW, (a Filipina) A 25 inch PIP color TV, a dvd/vhs player with remote, and a flat battery in the TV remote. Also the nearest store must be at least 50 miles away, and the remote batteries go kaput at 10pm. (after the store has closed) Then I dont have to go get some.. thats Boondocking !!!

We 'dry camp' usually 2 - 4 days no hook ups on a beach setting. We do have a generator, but only use it upon emergency. Our new TT will have solar set up, so the generator will truly be for emergency backup.

We feel spoiled when we have electric to plug into. We are on our fourth camper and have never been hooked up to a sewer line other than to dump out. Was all of that boon docking? No a lot is at the marina parking lot (dirt) where we keep our boat. Alot at primitive spots of campgrounds. We maybe spend 20% of our camping really booning no lights no water, showers etc. we have a genset and batts. solar would be nice. ( would have ordered it if did it again) Scotty.

After hearing some rather far-out interpretations of the term, I did a bit of research into the etymology of "boondock"; and my best guess, is that it originates with the Scottish boone, bon, bonnie; i.e. a bonnie place to dock! And for a Scotsman, bonnie, would merely mean any place that's free! <har!>

Quartzsite, AZ is wall to wall RVs in the winter. Imagine how messy it was this year with all the rain we had!!

I'll stick to RV parks, thank you!..

We go to many "dry camps" in the summer, places where there is (a) no water, (b) no sewer; and (c) plenty of people to get *())$# off if you run a generator. So we make sure we are fully charged, and loaded with H20 before we go. With a little common sense (like use a propane lantern outside and only run one side of the light switch, use bottled water for drinking) we can make 6-7-8 days in a dry camp. OK, so we don't take a full shower every day. Hey, my worst day camping beats my best day at work. And, besides, time camping will not be deducted from a person's life.
