As many have noted, use the resources of the different government agencies (National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Parks), they are very helpful. I stopped by the BLM office in Tucson and got information on where to boondock, including where to park the MH and use the toad from there to find a spot. On another excursion, used the NFS in southern CO, think it was South Fork, they provided excellent information including maps of the area I was going into.

Also as many have stated, using the toad to explore and find a spot will save a lot of frustration.
