Cape Hatteras light house is still a great stop and historic location. Tickets for climbing the tallest lighthouse in the US, and tallest brick lighthouse in the world are: $7 adults, $3.50 Seniors/children.
The onsite museum doesn't cost anything, and they show some great videos during the day without cost also.
The rangers also provide great programs on the barrier islands, that are interesting historically, etc,,,,also without cost.
Things to Do on Hatteras!

I have wonderful memories of that Cape.
It was 1972 and my Dad was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. We got a tent trailer and hauled it behind the station wagon to Hatteras. Also saw the beach the Wright brothers flew on and climbed the lighthouse (free back then).
Back then, it was no trouble to pull off the highway, on a deep shoulder, next to a creek for the night. Wonderful way to wake up, look out and see the mist on the water.
Was a fantastic trip that I still remember so clearly today.

I am expecting that some 200 Workhorse owners will generate NEW memories of their own when they come out to OBX!

...you have to be careful any time you pull off the road on the OBX. I've seen many a vehicle up to it's axle in the soft, deep sand waiting for a tow truck. Unless you're 4WD/AWD, I'd recommend that you never leave the pavement under any circumstance.

Frank P. Martin, Been there and done that! The only way that you can leave the road is if you take your vehicle tires down to about 6 psi of air.
Coming off the beach in select areas, the State of NC provides air pumps to air your tires back up!

Frank, you misunderstood. We were not at the beach but on our way to it. No sand to get stuck in. Besides, I figure my US Marine father could have handled it..... however, he never would have gotten stuck to begin with.
I would not do, now, what we did back then (camping on the side of the highway). It was 1972 and a VERY different world.
