We need to be thankful for all who served. We live in a better world thanks to the efforts of a select group of brave souls.

Unfortunately there are some who did not make it home to reap those benefits. But I know they are living in a better world none the less.

Guys! I'm just finding out about an organization who deserves my and your unwaivering support. I am attending meetings at our local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) here in Conway, SC, Chapter 57 and I am going to try and make a difference in the life of a fellow veteran.

I will be working a collection cup on Sunday at the Golden Corral in North Myrtle Beach and later next week I go to Charleston VA hospital to get a physical so that I can become a driver. Chapter 57 collected enough money plus matching funds were received from the local Ford dealer I believe and we are getting a new 2012 Ford van in the spring. I am not sure what kind of van we currently have but it's on its last legs and has well over 200,000 miles on the clock. The run is from Myrtle Beach/Conway area to Charleston VA hospital because there are veterans that can not afford transportation to the medical facility that can help them.

Chapter 57 is also getting Walmart cards for veterans that have no winter coats and they also voted to get 8 - $50 cards for veterans that would not be able to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving and a ham Christmas. They also donated money to the VA hospital so that destitute veterans may be given a set of clothing or a razor, toothbrush/paste and a comb if they all of a sudden get admitted to the VA hospital. Some of these guys have nothing, its terrible.

I don't have a lot to give but I will try to give of myself and my time and effort to make a difference in the life of an American Veteran.

God bless our troops in whatever theater they are currently engaged, bless our troops here at home who also serve with distinction. Offer a prayer for those families of active duty soldiers whose mommys and daddies are off to war. Thank a veteran or active duty military when ever you see one. These brave people are ensuring the right to pursue our freedoms of life, liberty and the American way.

When these guys come home and DEROS and ETS out, if you are in the position to do so, give a soldier a job. They already are trained and they often make the best employees.

Remember "Yes" but try to get out there and remember everyday and do something about it that makes a difference in the life of a Veteran that served honorably.

Is there a chapter in northern VA? I work at a hospital in Shenandoah valley. I work full time but I have a lot to be thankful for and would love to find a way to help those who were not as lucky as I was.

Taz, Here's a listing for all the chapters in Virginia. I'm not sure where in N-VA you are.

DAV Chapters (Click on your state)

Just wanted to mention that I also am taking the time to remember our POWs and MIAs. Bring them all home. No one left behind.

Today is a singular event. Veterans Day 11 month, 11 day, 11 year and 11 hour. This is the only time those alive today will ever experience this. I attended 3 ceremonies today, and the turn-out for each was fantastic.

I thank all who gave of themselves to serve our country and fellow citizens. Especially the WW II veterans, who are the reason we still enjoy the freedoms of our Constitution.
