Malcolm Berko writes an investment column that is in our local paper. He says the REAL cost of living went up 12%, but the gov't no longer uses food and energy (fuel) in their calculations. That keeps it from looking so bad and getting an accurate raise in the COLA

If you make $250k per year like most of the big men in Washington, thats a $9K per year raise.

Puts 3.6% a little more in perspective, don't it

But if you are like most of us in this part of the Forum, you'll be lucky to get $100.00 a month. So that changes the perspective a bit, doesn't it?

The Medicare premium increase is in fact higher than the COLA. So that $38 average raise comes out to a bit less than $20.

That would depend on when you started on Medicare. My premium is $96 and change. Those who just started this year pay $116, from what I understand. They would see more of a raise than the old timers.

Updated to add:

Just reading on another Veterans forum I follow that according to CNN, Medicare premiums was just announced to be $99.90 for 2012. That would be a $3.50 increase for most, and several dollar reduction for the few new ones.
