Hi, came across this, when making up a card to send to someone who's son in being deployed. It may have been posted here before..but in case it had not been, here you go:
"A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to, and including my life."

That is honor and courage."

It's not my saying so hopefully there aren't copyright issues. That said, I see it in a lot of sigs, though and usually says author unknown..so I assume whoever did write it doesn't seem to mind.
