I was just told that the AF reversed gears and will soon again issue the DOD auto registration sticker.

Being a retired Coastie, we had USCG decals on our vehicles until a few years ago. After having minor problems getting onto a couple of bases because the folks at the gates didn't recognize the USCG decals we started going to the Navy Sub base for our stickers.

I was at NAVSTA SAN DIEGO last week TAD and needed only an ID card and the rental car agreement to get on the base there. Go Figure!

I am staying at a Navy Base currently. Trailer next to me has an enlisted family. One of their trucks has an expired enlisted decal. The other truck has an expired officer decal and the license plate is expired. Guess when the check the decal at the gate they are just looking to see if you have one and not that it matches your id card or anything.

We are currently at Ft Knox and in their paper this week is an article on decals. They are ramping up their post security and to enter you must have either valid decals or a post pass. This is in addition to an ID check of all in the vehicle.

There doesn't appear to be any standardization; last week I entered Ft Sam Houston on ID card only & went to Pass & Id to get a sticker for the motorhome. After waiting an hour was told that decals are only given to people assigned to the base and as a retired member an ID was all I needed to get on base.

It seems the only consistency is inconsistency. When we came back to the U.S., after being overseas for nearly six years, I was pretty amazed to see we didn't need any stickers at all. This was on USAF, USN, & USA bases all over the east coast. After reporting to work, my wife got stopped the very first time she was driving on base and was told that she needed a sticker. This is the same base we'd been shopping at for over 2 weeks without any issues, as long as I was driving. Go figure. Needless to say we now have U.S. Army-issued DOD stickers on our 2 cars and motorhome.

My closest military installation is Ellington Field, about 25 miles up the road. I drove in there in my TOAD and tried to get a sticker for the MH. No way. Have to have the vehicle present. When I questioned why, it was just part of their procedure. They said they needed to check vin and tag# and install the sticker. (Never had a sticker installed by them in the past)

Pulled the MH out of storage and drove it to the base. They checked the my paper work - registration, insurance (both have VIN #) and driver license. Handed me the stickers and where to place them and sent me on my way.

In the case of Ellington Field, what you can say about seeing the sticker, is that on the day of registering with the security department, you had a proper registration, insurance, and a driver license. Once you drive away, any one of them can expire, but you still have a sticker good until 2011, in my case.

Security is in the eye of the beholder. They mean good with their regulations, but in many instances the scenarios are really not thought out. At least the ID Check at the gate gives some indication that you are a military member. Except for those fake laminated cards that any one can make up. I have never been asked to take my ID card out of my wallet so they are only looking at the front picture side.

Suppose they used that magnetic strip on the back of the card to activate a control gate. Place the swiper next to the guard so he can see the card. Not totally fool proof, but maybe better than what you have. There could be all kinds of information on the magnetic strip on expiration dates. Anyone of them in conflict would not raise the arm of the control gate. Permanent personnel could have a chipped sticker for EZ Pass access.

Ah! All it costs is inter-service coordination, cooperation, and money.

p.s., Oh! One time going through a federal installation gate, where the guard has to physically touch the ID Card, there were 4 of us in a vehicle. One female Inspector General Agent driving, and three other males in the vehicle. As a test, I exchanged ID badges with the female driver. I was in the back seat. The ID check went without a flaw and we were passed through the gate. I wonder what the military guards check for when they look at your ID card?

At Vandenberg AFB for the last couple of years they have been using a handheld scanner and scan your ID card as you enter the base. They do it in a flash so not a problem. Not sure what they do with all that data but they know how is coming on the base.

All the bases I use out here in west seem to have a procedure that requires them to handle the ID Card and look at both sides. So now I just have mine out and hand it to them.

Sounds like they are trying to make a difference. To bad it cannot be a common ground amongst all installations. I would not mind showing my ID every time through. And when in the military exchange system I automatically open my wallet and show my ID before they start ringing it up.

It protects us and our benefits.
