Retired AF with lots of experience staying at FAMCAMPS. Like many other places, "ya rolls da dice and ya see' whatch get".

Hurlburt AFB (our home town) small but nice.
McDill: lots of space/dog parks.
Sigsbee: Key West FL: great place to visit
Keesler: small lots, off base, close to casinos
Little Rock: a few good sites, more "other" sites.
USAF ACAD: nice sites. lots of trees.
FE Warren: spent a nite when it wasn't opened yet. Hot shower & w/d opened
Ft Richardson AK: Better than Elmendorf (no water until June)
Seward Resort AK: A must stay if you're in the area. Park OK, area is spectacular(sp)
Eielson AFB AK: Did not stay there/visited=rustic
McChord AFB WA: The Best. (if no room go to Ft Lewis)
Fairchild WA: pretty good site/lots of grass/easy walking path.
Elsworth SD: Great sites. Must us truck gate entrance.
McConnell KS: Only 7-8 sites, not well maintained.
Barksdale LA: small but good sites.
Maxwell/Gunter AL: Good.
Goodfellow AFB TX: Off base/got lucky to get spot. Great facilities.
Nellis AFB NV: HOT HOT HOT!!! No problem getting a spot.
DM AFB AZ: HOT HOT HOT!!! No problem getting a spot. Lots to see.
Fort Tuthill (Flagstaff AZ) Tough in with 40'. Not too bad a place.
Edwards AFB CA: Hot!! was OK.
Sharpe Army Depot, CA: Small but good. Great jumping off point to SF (80 miles)
Ft Benning GA: Great spots/lots of open space to wander around.
Malstrom AFB MT: Good sites, lots to see.
Kirkland AFB NM: one nite in, gone the next day.
Elizabath City CG NC: OK for a day or two if you can get a spot.
Grand Forks AFB ND: twice there, easy in easy out if you traveling Rte 2
Minot AFB ND: no space for big rig, limited space for anyone else.
W/P AFB OH: Good FAMCAMP, a must see museum.
Hill AFB UT: Great camp grounds. Lots to see in town.
Ft A.P. Hill VA: A little out of the way/a good place to stay.
Hanscom AFB MA: Good sites (ck availability), lots to see.
Holloman AFB NM: White Sand evening guided tour great, visit Cloud Croft!!!
West Point (USMA) Is a must see if you can get a spot. Up hill drive to get to but oh so worth the drive.
Ft Bragg NC. Tough to get to, lots of dust. New facilities being build 2008, not sure if done.

We have stayed in all these FAMCAMPS. We echo "BIGSKYBOB". like the security/price/comfort level/sharing experiences, new and old.

See ya down the road,

Norm & Anne-Marie

Thanks Norm -- we always check the U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks maintained by Larry Farquhar for the latest information on military RV parks. DoD would do well to support Larry and his efforts to provide the current status on all these facilities.

Jumping in here - PDI, by registering on his sight, Larry sends out a monthly email that updates any famcamps and other general news. Well worth it. We try to stay at Famcamps when we can. Safe travels....

Albert001,
Call the camp ground, or have your sister do it, and ask the process for guests. If they don't have one they will tell you that also. It is a base commander's decision, and each base can be different.

During my stays at FAM CAMPS it seems most of the folks using them are retirees. Seems like mos of the young active duty types have yet to find out about this most enjoyable activity called RVing.

Fort Sam has a updated RV Park on Canyon Lake. Was closed for a while but think it is now open and during a drive thru it looked rather nice. The lake should be back almost to normal after a period of being really low.

Something I am seeing at some of the Famcamps on larger installations is active duty folks are using them for longer periods of stay while waiting for housing or such. They are starting to take advantage of some of their benifets. The couple places I saw this and talked with the folks there, they have to get permission from the installation. One of the famcamps really support this as these are the folks that sustain them through the winter. Its a balancing act.

Hello back at you Wayne. It was great talking with you also. See you down the road somewhere, sometime.
