Many years ago we had JATO on B-47s. Felt like you were in a rocket.

Too bad they no longer allow Fat Albert to take off with JATO assist. They don't make the JATO bottles anymore and the Navy has declared the remaining ones are to be used for real world contingencies only.
Every time I took off in a Hercules I landed in one. Most Air Force types loathe jumping out of a perfectly good airplane, even if it was constructed by the lowest bidder.

In the Navy from 68-72. Attached to VC-3 out of San diego. We flew drones for the Navy to shoot at. What a great job I had and I got to fly the 130 while the pilot was loafing in the back taking pics. Got many hours in the 130 as a drone control operator and just boring holes to get pics and just up our allotment of fuel for the month.

The C 130 is one fine machine, as an old Army Aviator once said, "it's the Huey of the Air Force."

I once rode a C130 from Chu Lai to Cam Ranh Bay, the first leg on a journey home from Vietnam. The bird had been hauling cargo all day so when it picked up us passengers for the trip to Cam Ranh Bay there were no seats. I remember being lucky to be next to the skin and hanging on to a rib. I had no idea that the floor moved back 6 to 8 inches during take off.

Our floors didn't move. Perhaps you were on a pallet that wasn't properly secured?

We could quite possibly had been on pallets, they had been shipping freight the flight before our flight.
Who knows they probably didn't secure them so they would move just to give us a scare.
God that was 40 years ago next month, some things are fuzzier every day that passes.

I used to load and arm JATO back in the Marines. It was fun to feel the additional thrust assist the plane in takeoff. If I remember correctly, each of the added 8 bottles provided 1250 lbs of thrust which was close to having a 5th engine.
Now parachuting from a military aircraft, I'm still doing that and currently have 87 jumps. I don't chase them, just jump for proficancy.

I do have fond memories of that bird. Loved watching the early versions Of the AC 130's working out at night off our perimeter. Got to ride on one three times while in RVN (67-68). CRB to TSN on two occations and once from TSN to CRB. Twice sitting on the floor between pallets and once strapped to a stretcher close to the ramp. The one on the stretcher was the fun one. Due to activity at the end of our runway, a "combat" take off was done and the angle of accent and banking was so steep that I started sliding off of the stretcher out from under the straps. Nurse grabbed and held me until we leveled out.
