It wasn't until I transferred to Westover ARB that I got the courage to try **** on a shingle. I enjoyed it and miss restaurants that try to recreate it. Many have tried, but few follow through.

i think its the nature of the beast, or food in this case.
lots of eggs, lots of grits, lots of oatmeal, lots of dry toast, lots of chipped beef. using steam pots, so it just melds into one big smell.

oh how i miss the 4am chipped beef on toast smothered in gravy

On board ship.....
Officers ate in the 'Ward Room' with linen table cloths/napkins, silver wear, plates/glasses and served by Philippian Stewards

Mess deck.....enlisted including 'chiefs' ate there BUT Chiefs (E-6/UP) had their own section that was blocked off from us lower rates.

Don’t remember high or n the hog. SOS, bacon, powdered eggs and milk plus grits for breakfast. Couldn’t tell the difference between lunch and dinner. Both either chicken or some sort of beef thing. Usually so bland that you had to pour a whole shaker of salt and pepper on it.

X 2 I think every drunk sailor when in the Philippines tried ONE and that was enough for a lifetime, at least for me anyway..However the Hepatitis Sandwiches in Naples was pretty good while waiting for the Motor Whale Boat.

I agree with Jamie, the USAF always ate better than us dogfaces. My personal favorite though - C rations - lima beans and ham. PS: I was a sergeant longtime before I was was a 2LT. I guess in both my roles I missed the linen part.

Last cruise I made on good old Coral Sea we had a Boss's Day in the Chief's Mess once a month, we could invite one Officer each for dinner in the Chief's Mess. I guess the Ward Room wasn't so good on Coral Sea that cruise because I sure seemed to have a lot of Zeros ask me for an invite.
Let See:
Milk and Sugar on grits, no way in H--- for this East Tennessee born boy.
Balut, never could get that drunk.
Hepatitis Sandwiches, were they the ones that they ran through a ringer type thing? We called them Smash Sandwiches, I loved them with Peroni.
One of the best Chow Halls I ever ate in was at no other place than Wake Island. I was on a TranPac to the PI and we had to stop there for two days waiting on Aircraft parts was in 1973 I think. Another good Chow Hall was Pax River.

your milk and sugar on grits caused me to laugh out loud! AF basic training, July 71, my first chowhall meal was breakfast. iirc, moving in line the first thing I came to was grits ... and I thought it was cream of wheat.(California born and raised) so I said, "bowl of cream of wheat, please."

guy serving food looked at me like, "boy, you're about ate up with the dumb a$$, aren't ya?" but in the bowl it went.

I never got the hang of eating grits with other food - eggs, sausage, bacon, salt'n'pepper, shrimp, etc - but I'll put all of those in a bowl slightly crunchy steel cut oats and call it a meal.

funny, as I type this I can smell the steam table at that lackland chow hall.
