I can not even imagine the honor and yes, the burden, of wearing this, most high, metal. I have been fortunate to personally speak to men that were decorated with lesser honors like the Silver Star, The Bronze Star, The Navy Cross and more and the men I talked to were very humble about the whole experience. I spoke to one man that was in the grocery store with US Navy Retired on is cap and woven into the cap was the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart ribbon. I saluted him smartly and offered my hand in thanks for his service to my country. He grinned and said that, ''You must be Navy also son''. (he was in his late eighties). We talked for a moment or two in the front of the store and I told him that he must have been very brave to earn such high honors form our country. In typical sailor fashion he said ''Bull$hip sailor...... I was scared $hipless and dont remember half of what happened cause I had my eyes shut most of the time'' We both laughed. He said his shipmates mostly told him what happened and to beat it all, he said ''I got shot in the A$$. I thought I had wet my pants and I later found out it was blood running down my leg.'' He said he was not a hero but he served with a lot of heros. He said he just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time and his training took over. He looked me in the eye and said, ''Hell boy, you would have done the same thing if it had been you there''...... (I dont think so, I doubt it I would have that kind of courage)
It was an honor to stand and talk to ''living history'' and I took his pix but my phone screwed up and it didnt come out.
We are losing our WW2 vets at the rate of about one thousand per day now and this is living history that can not be replaced...
God bless our vets and thank them for their service to this nation
