I'll be in the DC area for 3 weeks in September, my days will be full in a course but will have evenings and weekends free, an on Driving the 80 miles down to Bethpage to try and meet some of you at the Rally but not sure how safe DC is or what to do within a 30 min drive from FT Belvoir. Any suggestions welcome
Ron

Ron,
Where will you be staying?
Fort Mead has a real nice campground.
Quantico is our favorite place and is only 1 hour max from DC.

Staying on base at Belvoir, no MH or DW.
It's a DA Civilian course for work on post, wish I could drive the MH and bring the family but schools back in so DS is in college and DD is in middle school. Can't imagine it will be too taxing so I wanted Some ideas for the evenings and drive the rental car down to meet all of you great folks on the weekend the rally starts. Map quest shows the Rally being south about 80 miles so should be an easy drive to spend some quality weekend time with you all.
Ron

Ron,
For Ft Belvoir to Bethbage don't trust your GPS..
Try I-95 south to
VA-3 South to
US-301 South to
US-17 South to
Left on Rt602 (Remlik) just past the race track
We are locals.. we stay off of US-17 between US-1 & US-17..

Thanks! Is the 80 mile estimate close or not really? Don't mind driving to come and meet the IRV2 family ( and pay SeaJay ten cents) but need to figure drive time for the return trip so I'm driving at midnight

The last turn is RT-603 vs 602..
More like 120 miles..
US-1 S/Richmond Hwy to Lake St - Google Maps
Around Northern Virginia travel is measured in time.. not distance..
The I-95 leg of your trip will be the worst.. traffic.. both ways..

DW and I are wanting to go to DC some time in the next couple of years. We'll be taking the RV dragging the Focus on a dolly. My main goal is that I would like to see the Wall and the area around it if nothing else, others if possible. As I'm retired AF, we would like to stay in a Famcamp. What would be the best bet in time of the year and location.

Two closest options are Quantico and Andrews-NAF Washington..
Quantico.. nice FamCamp, no bath house, waterfront sites on the reservoir.. must drive to Main Side" (USMC speak for the center of the old base) and ride the VRE (commuter train) into Union Ststion.. nice hour or so train ride..
Andrews-NAF Washington.. check with the fam camp.. I think they are re-modeling.. also ask the fam-camp how one gets to the Metro station near the gate Hint: looking for shuttle, Metro parking is $4.00+ a day..
Ft Mead has a very nice fam-camp.. on the MARC (Commuter train)
Both MARC and VRE have websites.. know of IRV2 couple to do the Quantico & VRE trip, said it was a great way to get into DC and a nice train ride..

This might be a tad late for your needs, but...
If you're OK with 30A electric, but no water or sewer, try Little Bennet Regional Park just outside Clarksburg, MD.
A few odd rules, but a nice, quiet place with a short drive to Gaithersburg for a Metro stop to DC.
