Disabled veterans in Illinois will no longer have to make the annual trip to the nearest veterans' service office to renew their free hunting and fishing license. Thanks to a new policy at the state Department of Veterans Affairs, the free licenses will no longer have an expiration date, freeing up as much as two hours in driving time and expense every year for disabled veterans in rural areas.
The policy change came in response to a letter from Ray G. Canaday, a Vietnam veteran who pointed to the unequal hardship the renewal requirement imposed on disabled veterans who lived far from a renewal office.
"Though this benefit is a small benefit, it is very important to the veteran community and an entitlement that they deserve," Canaday said in a statement released to the press.
For more information on the program, contact your nearest veterans' service office. The Madison County office can be reached at 618-465-3216, and the St. Clair County offices at 618-233-5140 (Belleville) and 618-583-2065 (East St. Louis). For a complete list of offices, visit
