What is the proper procedure for dealing with a handgun when checking into a Fam camp?

Has been discussed here:
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f96/firearms-300962.html
And
http://www.irv2.com/forums/f96/milit...ms-222899.html

I would expect that the rules at the gate (for facility entry) would be the rules at the FamCamp.

Safe travels

Traveling with hand guns is risky.. Some states may honor your CCW some may not.

Locking it in a locking box (IE a Cash Box) and locking that in lockable storage.. Safest way to carry it as in most cases, the officer needs a warrant to unlock both the compartment and the box.

But of course. that makes it kind of hard to use it for protection.

I use alternative protection, so far.. it's worked.

Being a responsible gun owner is one thing but it limits your choices. I don't worry about laws the campgrounds have when it is left in the MH. It's the state statutes that really matter. The thugs don't pay mind to any of it and they they like all the signs knowing that honest law abiding people are unarmed.

Unless it's a COE and they follow their own Federal laws. That needs to be fixed and is currently in court.

Our experience over the past 15 yrs has been to inquire when arriving at gate. On some bases we are given a firearms form to fill out and take it and weapon to base armory. Which may not be open till Monday. No problem.
Other cases we have been escorted to armory/base security before going to famcamp. There is a time limit as to how long you can stay.
It seems to vary more by service (army-navy-AF etc) as to procedure then anything else.
I would advise to not get caught on base with undeclared weapon. It was back after 9/11 we were 100% searched at Andrews and x-ray at Hood.
Last year at NASKW the security cars rolled up to a camp site at night and conducted a search of guys RV. Took him away in cuffs. The "don't ask-don't tell" rules could cost you your rig, not to mention firearm.

Ok so now I understand why some of the replies are what they are. I too would agree with using the proper protocol in this case verses just a regular campground with which I was replying to in post #5.

When you are on a military installation (FAM Camp) the military police do not need a warrant to search you, your vehicle or your residence. You agree to this when you enter the military installation. They usually have a sign at the entrance gate informing you of this.

Most military facilities require you to secure your firearms at the base armory.

(As one member stated if they don't ask don't tell.)

Declare at the gate and they will tell you how to proceed. Usually involves waiting for a security detail to escort you to their office, fill out paperwork, and leave the weapon. Some bases allow you to then keep the weapon in your possession. Some keep it until you depart and you have to go outside the gate to the visitor's center where they will give you your weapon back. Would you risk not reporting having a weapon?
