By all means, SA is pro military so don't forget to ask for the discounts as veterans, retired, active, etc. The worse you can get for asking is a "No," and that doesn't hurt much.

Slapshottr; would you recommend Lackland over Ft Sam Houston for camping and/or convenience to the Alamo/River Walk area?

Ft. Sam is closer to thr Alamo/River Walk area. Barring traffic, the road system in the SA area is pretty good so either location is very workable. If you have time, go through the museum/orientation at Mission San Jose. That will give you a very good overview of ths missions in the SA area and you will see what the Alamo typically consisted of at the time of the battle. What is left in downtown San Antonio is just a fraction of the original.

Either one will work. I never stayed at Ft Sam but we did drive thru to check it out. They both looked good and as stated in a previous reply as long as you have a car you will have no problem getting around. Another good activity in the area is Sea World.

We stayed at Ft Sam in July 2014 for a week.
Great place to stay - staff was great. Will probably be there again in August.

Y'all stop praising Fort Sam so much. I want to be able to call and get reservations.

Seriously, I prefer Ft. Sam over the other CG's in the area. It is an easy jumping off point for many of the attractions, and a drive out into the Hill Country.

The fastest route between Ft. Sam and the Alamo is 7 miles. Lackland to the Alamo is 14 miles. Once at the Alamo just walk across the street, down the steps (or elevator in hotel) and you are on the River Walk. Be sure to take the boat ride. Also, for some adult laughs stop and have a bite to eat at Dick's.
