Well, DFAS has used a backdoor to reduce Army retirement pay. Beginning with join dates after Sep. 7, 1980 retirement eligible soldiers must have a minimum 3 years time in grade to retire at that pay level. Less than three years TIG, retirement pay reverts to the previous pay grade. I don't know it this applies to all military branches, it only speaks of Army.

The current issue of Army ECHOES magazine announced The ST. Louis Reserve Component office is closed. All operations have been moved to:
HRC
ATTN: AHRC-PDR-RCR
1600 Spearhead Division Ave., Dept. 420
Ft. Know, KY 40122-5402
(502)613-8950

Hopefully this might save someone a useless drive/visit to ST. Louis

Ray,
USN required two years in grade to retire for E-7 and above back in 1999. Unless it was a forced retirement (HYT)..

Also all USN/USNR retired with pay are USN..

IIRC AF had much the same rule back in '93-'94. Had a friend give up a promotion at 19 plus years to E-7 because he did not want to do the extra two years.

Ray, I believe you are referring to changes that were made to the retirement system some time ago. The 50% after 20 went out for all military some time ago. And they are now making noises about putting the troops into a 401k type plan with no pay until one reaches a certain age.

Cliff, I got that from the latest online issue of Army Echoes.
