I say, "thank you, it was an honor to have served protecting our country. I would do it all over again if I could."

Thank you for your service.

I say thank you but am thinking where was this at in 69.It would’ve meant more.
I don’t know the motives of people that thank us but just accept it for what it is.

Honestly? I hate it! It's just a PC generic made up saying of appreciating someone's service. I'm like, Why don't you stop the nonsense and tell me how you really feel kind of attitude about it the whole thing. I appreciate and get it, but I'm just tired of it.

I'll often say thank you to Vietnam vets. Being a combat vet and a son of a Vietnam vet, I can relate what they have been thru so, it has some meaning to me to say thanks. I don't always wear my Iraq vet hat or say I'm a veteran when I meet these vets so they probably think I'm a loony civilian.

A simple "Thank You" may be all you need say.

I usually just say a thank you back to them.

I don’t normally answer the door when people come around selling things at the S&B. Have a doormat that says “home of a proud veteran”.

Well one day the doorbell rang and I could see it was a couple girls selling something so I just ignored it.

Actually felt bad later when I opened the door and a note fell out. One of the girls had taken the time to hand write a thank you for my service and a comment about her brother being in the Marines.

I served in the Navy '60 to '64. Bay of Pigs.

I always try to thank a Vet that I see.

TeJay spoke regarding WWII vets. They seem to really appreciate. Korea, and Vietnam also say thanks.

To me it is part of paying honor to those who have served and also homage to the USA.
In 69, I supported the military. Proud to say so.

I generally keep my service to myself. I don't wear my rank, decals, hats, patches, or even ask for veteran discounts at retail stores (my wife hates that), or anything that would connect me to service. I even grew facial hair so I wouldn't look like a soldier. But inevitably, my service comes out in some form of discussion (usually my wife), and I get the obligatory thank you. Makes me feel awkward.

I was on funeral detail at Ft. Knox. Both pallbearer and rifle team. I can't tell you how many we put in the ground with little to no representation. Thank you is just lip service to many IMO.

I say "thank you for the thank you".

There is no purpose served to second guess the person offering the Thank You.

Very few people offered that opinion back in '69.
