I never thought I'd say this

There is a long running thread here titled "Do you miss it?" My response in that thread was along the lines of "not really."

The installment of Mattis as SecDef changes all that. For the first time since I retired ten years ago, I wish I was still on active duty.

Me too but I'd have to go back to 1966 when I enlisted

Pinch me! Is this really happening?
What a dream pick. Hey, Patton believed in reincarnation.

He's back

Top it off with Palin at the VA.

I miss it so.

Scary times ahead. There is a reason for the law requiring so many years of retirement before a retired military person can be appointed to the SecDef position. Before Mattis can become SecDef, the Congress will have to wave this law.

I made the below post on another forum that I frequent and I stand by every word of it. I know a lot of people may have misgivings concerning General Mattis but please just give him a chance before you jump to any conclusions. If I were back on active duty he is the kind of leader I would be proud to follow over the side.

I was the only Engine Tech. Rep. at NAS Fallon for over 12 years so got to work with every VMFA there was at the time. Even had a Gunny Sergeant go through Chief's Initiation with me in 1980. They are the last true Military Service we have and understand RHIP."

Interesting to hear you mention VMFA 314 especially when you say "way back" in 85/86. I was a Black Knight "way back" in 66/67 when VMFA 314 was in Da Nang.

You got me on the past history dates I don't go that far back. I made a cruise on the Coral Sea 85/86 and VMFA-314/323 were part of AirWing back then. Funny you mentioned Da Nang, I was there late 71 and part of 72. I also have spent time at MCAS Beaufort SC, Cherry Point NC, MCAS Yuma AZ, El Toro CA, Miramar CA. Funny story was when I was at El Toro I had only been a Chief Petty Officer for about a year but a lot of the younger Marines thought I was an Officer because of the gold anchor on the lapel. I must have been saluted about 500 times while I was there. I considered it an honor back then and still do.

I agree with your first part...
Mad Dog WILL get things done!

But come on Palin at the VA.
Why you be 'haten' (as the kids say)

VA needs a retired military person at the top with the authority to immediately remove/fire incompetents, a budget to get things done right and the ability to use that monies where they will do the most good

And then you get idiots like this:
Gillibrand pledges to stand between Mattis and Pentagon | New York Post

Sorry to say she is from my home state.
She went into office with a A+ rating from NRA and only a couple weeks later jumped ship and joined the Dems on supporting Gun Control.
Two faced? I'd guess.
I spoke today to a close friend who recently retired from the Army as a high ranking officer with 28 years of service. He knows General Mattis personally and has a high regard for him.
Would someone want an unqualified civilian in place of a seasoned military veteran to fill this post? I surely don't. This ruling was made 59 years ago. Times have changed. We need to draw from the knowledge and experience of a person who has been there and done that.
Godspeed General. Thank you for your service, Sir.
Lynn

Having served with the Marine Corps for over 2 years, Navy Corpsman, I would follow General Mattis anywhere anytime.
