I used to trade for the pork, it was sort of bbq. That and crackers, heat the pork on the manifold of a 5k generator - one hole and not for to long!

Wayne, thanks for the memories. Ham Steaks, Beenie Weenies, Pound Cake and Peaches, Fruit Cocktail, Spaghetti. Always carried a bottle of Tabasco Sauce to cover up those that did not taste so good.

A little bit of aluminum foil and one could cook anything on a M-151, or M-35 engine. Bake a potato.

101st airborne grunt way up north. We were on 7 day re supply and only C rations. Made for one heavy rucksack. We saw mostly 1956 rations for the longest time. Pork and MFers were the worst. If not for whistashire or hot Sauce sent from home most would have been in eatable. Never saw much of anything but warm Frseca for soda.
Later on down south with the 1st Cav we were on 3 day re supply and only LRPS. Made for a nice light rucksack. Seasoned right the beef and rice was quite tasty. Also saw coke a cola on a regular basis and blocks of ice were sent out on the re supply birds. You could roll a soda can on a block of ice for a minute or two and it was cold as could be.
The art of making old timer hot chocolate took time to perfect, adding just the right amount of sugar packets and coffee creamer packets. Once you did perfect the recipe, that and a pound cake and you were set for the night.
Oh and heat tabs, never used them. We cooked with C-4.
Yep! We were boonie- rats

The fruit cake could also double as a hockey puck.

I was on one base in north western Afghanistan that breakfast and dinner was URE's (family size MRE's) and lunch was MRE's (for a little over a year!) - grabbed one that was BBQ Ribs, opened the package and this was printed on the box for the ribs - right then I wished I had the C-Rat beanie weenies instead

I remember the first time I saw the freeze-dried stuff. One of my guys ate the freeze-dried pork patty and other stuff right out of the packet(who had time to heat water to rehydrate) then got thirsty and drank half a canteen of water. A short time later he began moaning and holding his stomach, I thought he was really sick, the medic said not to worry, it was the pork patty swelling up.
I really liked the freeze-dried strawberries right out of the packet, but soaked the other stuff in canteen water first.
Come to think of it, I still have a case of C-rats in the basement that I bought for an emergency. Guess it's still there, that was a long time ago. I'm gonna find it and give the grandkids a treat.

I have to agree. The ham&eggs needed a lot of hot sauce and pepper. Nothing needed salt.

Beer worked also, in my environment, but just about any liquid worked with the fruit cake. I'd fix it the same way I did a tin of bread. Pop 3 holes in the top. Float liquid and watch it seep into the can, then put it on the fire and let it steam. y'all have to remember that it was back in the days of tin cans for c-rats. We didn't have any of that fancy stuff in foil wrap.

I would miss C-rats.
I actually liked ham and Lima's......and at the time in Chu Lai, I had the only electric coffee pot around, so when I had power, I could trade a cup of fresh coffee for ham and Lima's or about anything else I wanted. I still carry P-38's in my motorhome, my Jeep, and my pickup. Would not be caught without one...........Jim
