Just about every weekend we drive N on I-95 returning to NOVA from our campsite and marvel at the site of the Marine Corps Museum as seen from the highway. If you haven't seen it, it is a stylized version of the Iwo Jima flag raising. Very impressive!

Even more impressive is visiting the Marine Corps Museum.

Found a web site today on the USS Eldorado. I spent two years as a Marine, ships company aboard the Dodo. I found out that she was the Communications ship in the battle for Iwo Jima.

Iwo Jima is rich in history and it is all around us.

Don't forget Arlington National Cemetery, The Wall, The Air Force Memorial, The WWII Memorial, etc. etc. etc.

I live in one of the best history areas of the country and yes I do play tourist even when there are no visitors to escort.

Thank you! It is really inspirational and emotional to see those images and try to imagine what those Marines did taking Iwo. Prior to my years in the Coast Guard I spent three years in the Army, 66-69 and have always been interested in military history, but have focused on the ETO. My dad was in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII and I learned all that I could about airborne operations. That all changed after watching "The Pacific" on HBO and buying the DVD's. I've been studying and reading everything that I can find concerning the USMC in the Pacific and it is truly amazing what they had to go through. Currently, I'm reading a book on Kindle that focuses on the 28th Marines, the regiment that took Mt. Suribachi and it is inspiring. Agin, thanks for the post.
