Anyone had any experience with these programs? I was approached by our local JROTC folks and encouraged to do it. Any thoughts?

I looked into it with Navy JROTC. The Navy program requires you be retired for no more than 1 year. There are a few schools that are especially hard to fill that they will accept retirees of more than 1 year. In those cases you need to get hired by the school and will then be admitted to the program. As I recall once you are in the program and served a year at the school, you can transfer to any school with an openning.

In hig school I was in NDCC, the other flavor of JROTC. We had a retired Bird Cor. from the Army Corp of Engineers as our officer. Really a great guy and he liked working with all of the high school kids.

I was rifle team CApt and a Company Commander. Did not go into the ROTC program in college.

I think it is a great program for our youth. I had the privilege of working with JROTC at Camp Atterbury,IN about 15 years ago, with students from the Midwest states. Those students were attentive to instruction and very well-behaved. The instructors who accompanied them were all professionals and acted accordingly.
That experience prompted me to look for a full-time teaching job with JROTC; regrettably there was none within a reasonable driving range from my house.

I am retired Army, 0-5. I substituted in the 2 best high schools in Hanover County, VA, just north of Richmond. I lasted only a couple months due to the attitude and manner of the kids. Just watch I was not in the JROTC program altho they had it, (AF), in both schools. I just decided it wasn't worth it. I think we got $60 a day.
