One of the most demanding NCOs I ever served under was a female Army Sergeant First Class. The OP has some issues with females in the military, none of which I find valid in the least.

Ask a police officer who he would rather fight, a man or a woman.

Can you imagine a platoon of ticked off women attacking the enemy?

I'd take a platoon of women over a platoon of men any day.

Navy 63 to 67

Fine, but served doing what? I see your experience is in the USAF, I appreciate your service, but I spent two combat tours with the infantry and the artillery. Women could not have served in either unit due to the physical strength require to perform those duties. They could not haul the gear required or make the long forced marches required in the infantry. They could not lift and move heavy artillery projectiles or help move the trails on a towed howitzer. I don't have issues with females except they cannot do what is required in a shooting war.

Peace time garrison duties are one thing, combat arms in a shooting war is another. Women do not belong there, they cannot perform the duties.

The Marines ought to put my wife in charge, she'll whip those Marines in shape, she's whipped me for 49 years!

I can't imagine the folks of today putting up with 1957 Basic Training methods without calling their mommys and a lawyer. We did what we were told and it made better people of us and prepared us for whatever would come our way in the Army and in life. I am thankful that Uncle Sam gave me the privilege.

Totally agree. As long as it is a Marine watching my back I don't care if they are WM's, dark green or light green, we were (are) all Marines!

LOL in my day in the Corps, if a slacker continued, our CO would give him false transfer papers to the WMs. With the knowledge that they would shape his butt up. That straightened a few of em up, they wanted no part of that deal.

I remember in Oceanside, when the WMs hit town, the men stayed on base. Ever looked in the eyes of a _(mad)_______WM?

Hooverbill, I appreciate your service. I came in the Army in 72, retired in 2003, was recalled for a tour on an advisory team in Iraq in 2006. Women are all over the battle space, not just sitting on a FOB somewhere these days. A female MP a reserve unit was awarded the silver star for actions in clearing an Iraqi trench line during the invasion. A female medic that was assigned to an infantry unit was decorated for bravery after she evacuated wounded soldiers from a Hummer that had been hit, and returned fire on the enemy as well as performed life saving measures under fire. When some higher ups made noises about removing her from that assignment, the infantry guys were ticked.

On our advisor team of ten people, the one person I was more concerned with leaving one of us in the lurch was the husky male Major. When we were doing any dismounted ops and the female intel Captain was backing me up, I had no worries. I knew that if the fecal matter hit the fan she would make sure that I was not left behind.

The military of today is not the same as that of the 60s, but don't despair the young men AND women that are serving today are just as motivated and capable of doing their assigned jobs as any of us older folks ever were.

I personally would be less fearful of the big tough guy than the pissed off, PMSing woman DI. Now, that's mean!! But that's based on dealing with women for over 60 years. When I was 20 the guy probably would have scared me more.

Tough I only know a few Marines or Ex Marines (more "Retired") I know a lot of folks who wear an easily recognized uniform every day.. Michigan State Police.. Both men and women. Most of them are fully compentent (A couple were found by the department to be less than competent and discharged,,,,, of the ones I know, all were men) I know one woman I'd consider a "problem".

And a good number of the women I know who wear that uniform... Could take any man in the department and at the very least give him a first class work out.. Most of them they could put on the floor fast.

Then there's 2 guns... After a subject shot her.. She pulled TWO GUNS and returned the favor. Then they all went to hospital for a bit of body work (Bullet ectemy)

(NOTE: All lived, She returned to duty fairly quickly.. HE... Well, I suspect he is still working for Michigan State Industries... They make, among other things, license plates)
