The best book to have for information about all the military RV camping areas is the Military Living's Military RV, Camping, & Outdoor Recreation book. It also includes golf courses and marinas and list over 225 military RV camping locations as well as MWR Outdoor Recreation locations.

You can also get it from Military Living at www.MilitaryLiving.com as well as at the PX. Telephone is (703) 237-0203.

There have been questions about eligibility. In the book, there are phone numbers for reservations (even though some don't have reservations) that you can call to verify eligibility. It can change from one command to another for some eligibility.

There is a lot more in this book than just RV camping. There are cabins, condos, tent spaces, and even RV storage. Read all about it at the above web site.

Any valid U.S. military ID card holder is eligible to use these facilities. In addition, DOD employees, active and retired, are usually accepted at these facilities.

We have stayed at a bunch of military Famcamps in the last 3 years. I can't say there was one that was less than satisfactory. Most were downright great!!! Many times a military famcamp is a little off the beaten trail for us to just drop in on our way. Other times it is a destination.

Carol's family is in So. ILL so we PLANNED our stay at Scott AFB near Mascoutah IL. Great campground, good base. Our favorite "find" was Kings Bay Naval Sub Base in St. Mary's, southern Georgia (we couldn't get into Ft. Stewart at the time). We absolutely use the book George referenced all the time. We could put together a good list of the great FamCamps we have found, but definitely check out the book. Really, we have stayed at about two dozen famcamps and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. We recommend calling ahead, because they can fill up if 1)it's a snowbird destination or 2) there is something going on in the area. Our only complaint, if any, is that each post/base/station has its own reservation rules. Not a problem for us since we aren't staying anywhere long term.

We just returned to New England from the south coast. We used Betty's RV Park in Abbyeville LA (private but small and great folks)
Ft Rucker AL (small & quiet/looks like they are starting to upgrade)
Ft Benning Deston FL (Hurlbut Field CG is just up the road) because Tyndall was full.
Charleston AF Base SC (small but nice. Dining facilities are available at the mess facility[dirt cheap, $1.50 for a full breakfast)
Camp LeJeune Jacksonville NC $15. w/cable, right next to the ocean.
Ft Stewart was still full (overflow only but the overflow has elec and is on the lake)

In the past we used:
Camp Blanding RV Park ARNG near Starke FL right on their lake. We were the only ones there.
Camp A P Hill VA (one good days haul from RI)
Round Pond West Point NY (unhook toad BEFORE going up the hill to the CG)
Fourth Cliff CamCamp Scituate MA (small, but right on the ocean with great view)
Delaware NG Training Camp FamCamp Bethany Beach NJ

Then there always Camp Pedro Dillon SC right off I-95 (clean, quiet, cheap, most all pull-thru)

NOTE: We finally got DOD stickers on all our vehicles. Makes the gates hassle free.

Regards,
SFC Ford Hilton (ret)

We just found one by accident south of Wilmington, NC. We were on our way to Ft. Fisher Historic site. It is the Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation area. Tents are 10 and RV is 18. They have a dining hall and activities. It is across the street from the beach. I am sad that we found this after we had paid 38/nt for 2 nts at the KOA in Wilmington.

We just were told by someone how great the beach at Camp Lejeune is. My dh has been wanting to go back to see CL. He did basic there 20 years ago. He is now an Army chaplain. Glad to see that there is a CG there.

Anyone know of one near St. Augustine, FL? Or near Orlando, or williamsburg, VA?

I need to get that book. I will be aggravated if we travel and pay a lot and then find a military one near by. We can stay for longer that way too!

Hi mamaloya,
Around Williamburg there is Ft Story (part of Ft Eustis), Virginia Beach (extreme north end), and a Navy FamCamp BOTH close by the south end of the Bay Bridge/Tunnel, and not far from Wmsburg.
By all means grab a copy of the FamCamp directory at the next PX. There should be a new one out shortly.

Go to militarycampgrounds.us which also lists all the military campgrounds and some at reserve bases which aren't listed in the book.

If you are looking for a really nice place check out Cheatham Annex in Yorktown. You are minutes away from Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country. If I remember, you can also rent boats there and go fishing.

Hey, thanks. We might try Cheatham as we're planning on going to the National RV rally in Asheville, NC in August and then going up the coast to NH to visit the folks. That would be a good stop for a couple of days. I was stationed at Dam Neck in '61 for 6 months and then spent three years at Norfolk.

Thanks for the tips. I picked up my copy today. It was 12.95, but worth it. I can't wait to start planning.

mamaloya,
That book (Military), along with
Golden Age Passport (National Parks, etc.),
and Passport America (1/2 price campgrounds),
have allowed us on limited income to continue to enjoy "getting away" despite the increased price of gas and the remarkable increase in campground fees. When we were full-time 1986-1991, camping fees were around $10. to $15. everywhere. The most expensive park we were in back then ($25,) was ORA (Outdoore Resorts of America) just west of the main gate to Disney. We work-camped there for 4 months in the winter for 4 years. Now, at least here in New England $25. is CHEAP. So we are still able to spend about 1/3 of the year "on the road".
Life is Good, enjoy.

My husband has 100% VA service-connected disability. We've only stayed at one base in the last 6 mos. Where can we get DoD stickers for our vehicles, as you mentioned above??

Thanks,
