The DoD is removing SSN's from all Military and Dependent ID cards. See that webpage for complete information and details.

That figures it took me 30 years to get an updated retired card so I could use the Family Campgrounds, I wonder how long I've got before I get the "new" one updated.

Thanks for the post.

Ray,

I am glad they are doing that. I think it gives us too much of the wrong exposure!

The only problem is for those that use their military or va ids for ids. Without a ss number , they are useless to the general public.

Mick, not trying to start something, but most people have a drivers license with their picture on it. The VA stopped putting SSN's on our cards several years ago and now they ask you for your DOB.

jdoc, u not starting something, I have a few friends from Nam that cannot drive, ARE TOTALLY disabled, have credit problems (where they cant get a state ID, without being checked for you know what), and the only ID they can get is the VA medical card, and quite honestly, they need all the help they can get.

I took one to the bank the other day to cash his check on my account. He had an expired drivers license , a SS card, his VA card with his picture on it. His old card had his ss number on it but they gave him a new one without it.

As hard as it seems to be, they refused to accept all that for ID and refused to cash his disability check, even though I guaranteed it. They said that govt checks require a valid ID with ss number on it. I was dumbfounded too.

I finally got the bank mgr to call the VA and confirm his identy, but he would have been up the creek without my help.

Yes, I go to the VA hospital and transport disabled vets like myself to shopping, banks, pay their bills etc. ( And no, I dont get paid or reimbursed.) And I take all branches, not just the USMC. lol.

I dont know if you picked up on it or not, but I love all military people, especially those that cannot do it on their own.

God bless the military people.

(where they cant get a state ID, without being checked for you know what),

The state has no recourse if your friend burns a bottle. Take a leak and get the ID.

Never heard of this before, what state is this??

Banking institutions are the exception to federal law, which states "SSN is not to be used for identification purposes". There should not be a living human in the U.S. without a SSN. DoD is substituting a DoD number on our ID card, which they link (in their database) to our SSN.
As for any (not banking) civilian business requiring my SSN; I simply rattle off a pre-determined false SSN. I've never been questioned on that either.

LOL burns a bottle? Just out of curosity have you ever been to a VA hospital where veternas live? Have you ever seen a veteran with REAL ptsd? Have you ever seen a person who is afraid of the light and the dark? One who cannot drive period due to health?

Cant check their ids. get real there are thousands of thousands of veterans with outstanding warrants due to credit, lawsuits, tickets, etc.

Why do people always think a disabled veteran has a drug or alcohol problem?

If you have any doubts about my bank saying and doing that, send me a pm and I will give you the name , phone and the bank mgrs name that refused to cash the check with oout a picture id and a ss no on it. And Ill let her explain to you why she cant do it. Believe me, with the heck I raised over it, everyone in that bank will remember the case.
You can rattle off all the SS numbers you want, but at my bank without a VALID picture ID and a SS card, you are stuck. He had his va card, he had an expired drivers license. He cannot get a state ID due to lawsuits against him.

Be thankful you are not at the end of the food chain like some of these messed up veterans are.

Reread your post #6. What do they have to be checked for????

Don't need to hang out at the VA. Saw plenty of death first hand. Don't need to see left overs.

If you go to the state and ask for a picture ID, the state runs a check to see if there are any people who WANT you in court. That is apparently the only ID the bank will use for ID.

why does the VA need to know all of my personal bank accounts, 401's, IRA'S, etc. before issuing me an ID card. they say in-case I need their medical services. I said if I ever do I would then divulge all of my personal info to them, but they want it know. 4 years of my life 12 months in Nam is not enough to get me an ID card.

Unless you have a service connected medical issue, and based on your financial situation, you may not be eligible for "free" VA care. They'll check your finances, and make that determination. If you don't qualify for free VA service, you can still see a VA MD, but normally the cost is more than for a regular MD...plus a huge PITA.

Not only are they removing SSN, the Air Force a few years ago stopped issuing vehicle stickers. They do 100% ID check when entering an AFB. Air Force (I assume other services doing the same) has an electronic system that you must be entered into in case they are scanning ID cards at entrance to base. Wife just renewed her ID and we both had to be entered into this new system. Don't plan to get a new ID for myself until they make me.
