Jim, post 9/11 most, maybe all, installations won't let you turn around if you refuse an inspection. In fact, that action sends up a red flag which may you surrounded by law enforcement.

I guess the Navy is a little easier than the Army. Although Retired Army, I find myself staying primarily at Naval Air Stations. I've never been searched and they let people turn around all the time.

The DOD has elimated military vehicle stickers for all branches of the service. Reason for this is to protect the military member and family that may be traveling in these vehicles which could become a target for whoever hates America, or the military, and it also saves the goverment money. A ID check is usually conducted now, and everybody must have some sort of picture ID, as well as someone in the vehicle must posses a military ID. This sort of security is far better than just getting waved through. It doesnt bother me or upset me to show my Retired Military ID to any gateguard personnel.

All the services, Navy was the last holdout, have seen the light about how much money they can save by dxing the sticker requirement and the registration requirement altogether. But you MUST have your license, registration and insurance to show, every time you enter a military installation.

Yoders2go,
Not exactly. All I have had to show was my ID Card, and depending on whether it was 100% ID check or not, or the time of day, or the whim of the security guard, when I had passengers in the car sometimes they have to show their ID and sometimes I just have to show mine. I have never been asked for registration or insurance.

Just completed a trip and stayed at military family camps at these locations.
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina (x2)
Maryland.

Previous Fam camps
San Antonio
Arizona
California
Washington

Never insurance or registration.

Has something changed recently?

This past summer

Wright Patterson AFB
Great Lakes Navel Station
Shaw AFB Recreation Area
Shaw AFB
Charleston Joint AF Station
Fort Fisher Recreation Area
Seymour Johnson Joint Base

Nothing but ID card required, never had anything else required or asked for in the past four years, except a few times if I had any "guns" with me.

The Marines (MCRD, Miramar and Camp Pendleton) at least, are requiring only permanent party to get vehicle decals.

Not being active duty, I have never had to show anything besides Retired ID - no visitors pass needed.

And, Pendleton is now an open installation and getting on only requires showing drivers license and answering "where are you going?"

I think that is just odd, but I'm not on the Base CO's staff to have an answer as to why.

Many of the bases are becoming, "Open Bases." It goes above all my reasoning, but I'm sure they have their answers.

I'm not saying they are asking for registration and insurance, along with id, I'm just telling you what the regulation/instruction says. If you have it with you, and they ask for it, no sweat. If they ask and you don't have it, or it isn't current, you can be refused access.

Ft. Huachuca, an army base in Sierra Vista, AZ, requires nothing more than showing a valid driver's license to the gate sentry to get on post. No military ID is required, no insurance, no reg. I wasn't asked my business on post nor where I was going on post. And I have no military affiliation. For six months last year our nephew was there for army training and we went on post about every weekend to take him to Tucson for R&R.

At Randolph AFB, San Antonio, TX, we were required to get visitor's pass with my photo on it and have our sponsor present during the pass issuance.

There's seems to be no rhyme or reason to getting on military bases.

San Diego Naval base at times have asked that all passengers in my truck produce an ID. That was during a 100% ID check. They don't always check , but you never know.
