We have stayed at the Air Force & Navy Lodges in the past - sometimes some of these lodgings are expensive. We do have an RV which we would rather travel in, but sometimes like if we are taking advantage of a condo at the Armed Forces Vacation Club we need lodging while in transit to the condo. I see listed in the Temporary Military Lodging Around the World book housing with the initials DV/VIP, SEVQ, VAQ, TLF etc - I don't understand these - my husband was in the military and we do have military ID so we are able to use military facilities. My husband was active duty for 2 1/2 yrs and finished up the 20yrs in the reserves. Are these cheaper lodgings Space-A? Can we use them? Is it just for adults or can we bring our 2 grandchildren with us? I'd appreciate any info available - I hate paying those high prices at commercial hotels that are usually dirty and are a safety concern!

Hi Mimi:

DV is diabled veteran and VIP is what it has always been. TLF is Temporary Living Facility. I'm not sure what the others are. But, if you are seeing these under the Eligibility paragraph, then all you need to know is that you're qualified to stay in all of them. If you can use the Lodges, then all other facilities are available to you. Basically, there should be phone numbers in the book, call and ask if you are in doubt. Some facilities may be different than others. You can also ask for a particular place on this forum to see if someone has been there and can give you a report.

When we refer to Space A, we're referring to traveling on military aircraft. Dependents cannot fly military air without the sponsor. My wife and I flew to Germany and back on military air a few years ago. We're going to Hawaii via Space A this year and will stay in some of the cabins which the military has on various islands. A whole lot cheaper than the civilian way.

BTW, what is the Armed Forces Vacation Club? Is it privately owned or part of MWR?

2 years ago the military started allowing dependents to travel within CONUS on a temporary basis. Last time I checked it is still in effect.

Just wanted to mention that some famcamps have cabins as well. Some are just camping cabins, but some are fully equipped with baths and kitchens and up to 3 bedrooms. I have seen them at Ft. Fisher, Smith Lake (Ft. Bragg), and Ft. Jackson. They are nice and generally go for $30-50 per night.
