We drove (in the car) yesterday, 11/20/2012, to the brand new FamCamp on "Naval air Station Joint Reserve Base", Belle Chase, LA.
We're in Gulfport, MS now- 1 1/2 hours for us.
There is now only ONE FamCamp facility in the New Orleans area.
Having never been there before, it was a challenging drive through downtown which is undergoing major construction. Don't attempt this in an RV. Thank goodness we were in our car.
Here is a map on how to get to the Air Station. I highlighted the route from I-10 in pink. It's about a 10 mile drive from I-10. Lots of traffic and lots of traffic lights on Belle Chase Highway.
- Depart I-10 on Exit 234A. By the "Superdome"
- Get on the W.B.E. (West Bank Expressway) H-90.
- Depart the W.B.E. at Belle Chase highway- H-23.
- Main Gate is noted by a "Blue Angel" F-18, after passing through Belle Chase. If your coming from I-10, the base in on your right side.
Here are pictures of the FamCamp-
Main gate area- taken as we departed.
This picture is taken from the entrance end. "Loop A" is in this view.
"Terry", is the MWR manager for the FamCamp. His phone number is:
504-678-3449.
This is the far end of "Loop B". Both loop pictures are looking at the center of the FamCamp Bathhouse, office, etc. You can see an aviation hangar in the background.
The center complex-
A typical site-
I don't think this info is in any book, or on the internet, yet.
The Park is called "Aviation Park"
Terry says the entrance road will be paved soon.
There is a large old "FEMA" park on the other side of the new fence. I'm guessing it is left over from "Katrina" days. It still is in use for Service people going through training at this facility. It's in very poor condition and not available for our use.
You can call Terry for a reservation or go on line, maybe, soon- "DOD Reservations".
If you put in this address into the GPS:
400 Russell Ave. Bldg. 465
Belle Chasse, Louisiana, 70037
It will take you to a closed gate, I know-
. Just stay on on Belle Chase Hwy. You'll see the F-18 soon-
.
There is a BX and Commissary close by.
Once on the base go to the first 4 way stop sign. Turn left and you'll soon see the old FEMA park. The new park is just past the old park, BEAR left! No signs up yet.
Terry's taking reservations now for Mardi gras-
.
$20/day, $120/week (For 7 days). You will be assigned a site when you give a credit card hold for at least "one night". Well see how well that works out down the road-
. Just pull in after hours and see them in the A.M.
OH- There is a $1 fee going across the 'ole Miss bridge. I don't know how much for extra axles.
Good luck,
