NAS New Orleans- FamCamp

We drove (in the car) yesterday, 11/20/2012, to the brand new FamCamp on "Naval air Station Joint Reserve Base", Belle Chase, LA.
We're in Gulfport, MS now- 1 1/2 hours for us.

There is now only ONE FamCamp facility in the New Orleans area.

Having never been there before, it was a challenging drive through downtown which is undergoing major construction. Don't attempt this in an RV. Thank goodness we were in our car.

Here is a map on how to get to the Air Station. I highlighted the route from I-10 in pink. It's about a 10 mile drive from I-10. Lots of traffic and lots of traffic lights on Belle Chase Highway.

- Depart I-10 on Exit 234A. By the "Superdome"
- Get on the W.B.E. (West Bank Expressway) H-90.
- Depart the W.B.E. at Belle Chase highway- H-23.
- Main Gate is noted by a "Blue Angel" F-18, after passing through Belle Chase. If your coming from I-10, the base in on your right side.

Here are pictures of the FamCamp-

Main gate area- taken as we departed.

This picture is taken from the entrance end. "Loop A" is in this view.
"Terry", is the MWR manager for the FamCamp. His phone number is:
504-678-3449.

This is the far end of "Loop B". Both loop pictures are looking at the center of the FamCamp Bathhouse, office, etc. You can see an aviation hangar in the background.

The center complex-

A typical site-

I don't think this info is in any book, or on the internet, yet.
The Park is called "Aviation Park"

Terry says the entrance road will be paved soon.
There is a large old "FEMA" park on the other side of the new fence. I'm guessing it is left over from "Katrina" days. It still is in use for Service people going through training at this facility. It's in very poor condition and not available for our use.

You can call Terry for a reservation or go on line, maybe, soon- "DOD Reservations".

If you put in this address into the GPS:

400 Russell Ave. Bldg. 465
Belle Chasse, Louisiana, 70037

It will take you to a closed gate, I know- . Just stay on on Belle Chase Hwy. You'll see the F-18 soon- .

There is a BX and Commissary close by.

Once on the base go to the first 4 way stop sign. Turn left and you'll soon see the old FEMA park. The new park is just past the old park, BEAR left! No signs up yet.

Terry's taking reservations now for Mardi gras- .
$20/day, $120/week (For 7 days). You will be assigned a site when you give a credit card hold for at least "one night". Well see how well that works out down the road-. Just pull in after hours and see them in the A.M.

OH- There is a $1 fee going across the 'ole Miss bridge. I don't know how much for extra axles.

Good luck,

Thanks for the review...actually made reservations for the camp last half of Feb. Going to take in NO and the delta. The guy who answers the phone at reservations seems like a great guy and working hard to make this FAMCamp successful.

Even better at 'Lil G's. I'm full time at the JRB and Adam's is getting really poor reviews these days...

We spent at here days at Bell Chase last summer. Great little park and Terry is really helpful.

Unfortunately, we hit NO at rush hour heading west on I-10. Lots of fun.

I also want to put in a good word for the clinic on base. While in the French District, I ate some really delicious fried oysters. Unfortunately, that night my throat started to swell up. Come morning, I was in pretty bad shape. We walked into the clinic and it was all hands on deck. They had me admitted in no time and under treatment post haste. Within an hour of coming in the swelling was under control. My hat is off to them. Thanks.

We'll go back.

At the risk of being insensitive, it's kinda like the "choose your rate, choose your fate" thing. You gotta do the time if you want the bennies.

I've known lots of folks that made the decision to get out before 20 then later wish they had stayed the course.

We were there for Christmas 2012. Great base! Well stocked commissary & nice exchange. Had one meal at the "diner" located by the bowling alley. Okay for a quick meal.

Make sure you go to the Travel/Ticket Office - also near the bowling alley & check out the discounts for local attractions.

Lil G's is great food! We ate there twice!

To go down to the French Qtr, head to Algiers Point for the free people ferry. At Algiers there is a parking lot that will cost you probably $10 to a local who says he will watch your vehicle. He was never there when we returned, but there was never a problem with the vehicle. And driving in the Qtr plus parking was prohibitive.

You can buy a day pass for $3 that is good for the trolleys & bus system. We took the old trolley out St Charles & saw the beautiful decorated homes.

As with anywhere one travels, just be aware of your surroundings & NOLA is perfectly fine.

Don't forget the WWII museum. See the movie first then do the tour. We saw the movie, then walked several blocks to Mother's for lunch, then back to see the museum.

We plan on going back - there is so much more to see & so much more of the wonderful food to try!

Cracy: May I suggest the following youtube videos. Watch in listed order.
1. Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwulf (picture of army helicopter version)
2. Bad Moon Rising by CCR (starts similar to #1, but different ending)
3. We gotta get out of this place by CCR (you will know which one)

Many people on this forum were in those situations...sometimes it just grates.

NAS New Orleans- FamCamp

We live in NOLA and go to BC a lot. There are 2 areas in the camp. I'd live in the back park but you do have to move every 14 days.

NOLA is an amazing place but very different than most places.

PM me if you need help
