This video is a good indication of why I went into the USMC. Talk about an E ticket ride. Wow!!

You gotta have a ''SET'' to be a Navy pilot. I mean a ''BIG SET'' to put it down in the dark with a ''Dutch roll'' on the fan tail and low on fuel to boot.
My Navy....... YEAH......
Nuff said......

God bless our vets...... they earned our freedom while we slept all safe and warm....

He made that look so easy it was probably a U.S Marine Corps Pilot.

I'm glad he had safety in mind and looked over his shoulder before making his turn.

A boyhood friend, retired USMC Lt Col. would send me photos of his typical "day at the office", an F-18 Super Hornet.

Favorite one was a self portrait from the air over the pyramids at Giza. Not sure how he managed that one from a single seater.

But I have to admit to a huge dose of jealousy towards him....right until he reminded me of the fun of night landings in sporty weather.

What amazing men and women doing those, and the less glamorous ones behind the scenes, and below decks.

God bless them all.

Talked to a recruiter back in college, I wanted to do this very badly. Had good math and science skills, but I have also worn glasses since I was 13. Basically the whole idea was DOA.

Also too short for the NBA!

I bought a DP last year. Trying to make up my mind on a TOAD. Kinda set on a 2011 Explorer, that is my wife is set on the idea. Everything we have now is either too big (Nissan Armada) or requires a tow dolly (or pumps etc). We hope to get rid of everything except the Chrysler convertible and buy something to tow and use as our main vehicle when we are home.
Do you like your Explorer? Does it tow well? Would you recommend it?
If you want, you can contact me at james.r.loeffler@boeing.com

Maybe so but it was a Navy pilot that taught him!

OK you military gurus around here, I need some help from you. Our 24 year old son, who is an ASE certified auto mechanic, who is living and dying for nuts, bolts and motor oil, has decided that he wants to spend some time of his life in the US military. He is not sure whether the Navy or the Army would give him more and better nuts and bolts possibilities. He is not interested in guns and rockets, he wants to swing a wrench either at a helicopter engine or a ships nuclear power plant, or anything in between (and he is great to have around for motorhome work ).

What would you feel, which branch of the armed forces is better suited for a kid with such a talent/desirre?

I don't have much of any experience in that filed. My contribution to the military was the cream and solution that protected our soldiers during desert storm against sand flees and other biting critters (as in: a soldier who is not itching all over his body is a happy soldier).

Hudsoner,

I'm retired Navy Aviation Electronics guy. Aviation is a place to look for follow on career. Nuclear is another route. After I retired I went into flight test on my last Navy airplane the one you just watched. The Hornet is a heck of a bird. It will be flying for multiple Nations for many years to come. My job security.

I'm not sure that you will get a lot of Army response on a Navy Carrier thread but each service has its pluses and minuses. I have worked aircraft maintenance issues with members of all services, and all are just as passionate about their branch as I am about the Navy.
From a personal point of view, I spent 20 years as a Navy AD and beyond any doubt, the best decision I ever made in life was joining the Navy. I left the Navy with a pension, degree, and a job offer from McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). Now, 28 years later, I am getting ready to really retire and my life is wonderful. Everything I own, everything I have accomplished, everything I am proud of, can be traced back to my decision to join the Navy.
I always tell people, the Navy was good to me, and I was good to the Navy. Or maybe I sould say, I was good to the Navy and the Navy was good to me. So encourage your son to do some research. The Navy and Air Force will be more professional and less military, and the Marine Corps and Army will be more military and less professional, but whatever service he chooses, what he gets out of it will depend on what he puts into it. Good luck to him. Whatever he decides will be good for him, good for his country, and he can be proud of his service for the rest of his life.
