Now WeKnowWhy He Was a General -----

In a recent interview,
General Norman Schwarzkopf
was asked if he thought
there was room for forgiveness
toward the people who have harbored
and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated
the 9/11 attacks on America .
His answer was classic Schwarzkopf.
The General said, " I believe that forgiving them is God's function.
OURjob is to arrange the meeting." AMEN

His autobiography is "It doesn't take a hero". A good read, and also insights into the Army during his tenure.

I was on General Schwartzkopf's staff when he was the commander of the 172d Inf Bde, Ft Richardson, AK. He was a full colonel then. The soldiers could not ask for a better commander. I had the pleasure of doing my last tour of duty during the Gulf War, and again General Schwartzkopf was my commander.

IMO, the general epitomizes the type of leaders we desperately need in today's military. Unfortunately, our leaders have taken a laissez-faire leadership approach the past twenty-plus years. We don't 'order' troops to perform a task, we ask them to 'please do this, if you don't mind'.

I was there 73-78. General Schwartzkopf was there in the middle of my tour, I believe 74-76.

Bob, 172d was the time of my life. I really enjoyed being in AK. Did you take command from Maj Dana Harnish? I believe he was the commander when I left in march 78. Dana could have been the Hq's commander. Thank You for your service. We are holding up in NM taking care of the grandaughter while our daughter does a tour in Iraq. She is a CPT and the S4 of a combat support bn. If all goes well and the ash from the volcano does not keep the flights grounded she will be home soon and we will be back on the road.

Jim, thank you for your service and that of your daughter also.
Didn't meet a MAJ Harnish. Cmdr I replaced was a CPT, but don't recall his name. Things do change, I understand the 172nd is now in Germany.
Like you, time in AK was the best. Being RV'ers while there allowed us to enjoy many areas we would never have seen without one. If AK was within reasonable commuting distance of NH we would be living there now. We've been back 2x, 96 and 00. Both times we flew in and rented a MH.
