Has anyone stayed at the Oak grove park on base. Planning on being there for a week in October (weather permiting). any comments on the FAMCAMP, any sites to avoid.

Thanks

bob

As a side note, you can get some info on about any military camp in the country here. I joined some time ago and I'm happy with the site. They stay on top of changes and solicit reviews.

We have stayed there several times. We have had sites in all areas of the campground and loved them all. There are a few sites that sit close to the water...well as close as you could get. And they are great although if you back in you won't be able to see the water if you don't have a rear window. Our favorite site sits under the oaks just to the right of the lighthouse (not a functioning one, but ornamental). The sites are large, level and clean. This campground does take reservations and I would advise it for the fall and winter seasons as there are a lot of winter travelers there.

We just stayed there in April '09. We also stayed there in '08. Very nice park. If I remember correctly we were in site #8 in '08 and we were in a 5th wheel. This year we were in (I think) site #4, a motorhome. Both of those sites were in the circle, and were pull through sites. Site #4, in the MH, looked out towards the beach area. Sites 2, 3, & 4 pull through would probably be the best view, but you will still have a few sites in front of your view, but not bad. If you go to maps.live.com and put in the coordinates 30.342755, -87.314162 you can do a birds eye view of the CG. On Tuesday mornings, when the Blue Angels are in town, they practice 1/4 mile from the CG - it's free. The Air Museum is nice to visit after the air show.

I don't know where you are headed, but if you are going across the panhandle, make a stop at the Mayport Naval Station Campground, "Pelican Roost." You will love the view of the mouth of the St. John's River with the submarines and shipping lanes.

Edited: p.s., reservations highly recommended.

Hi Bob, you'll really like Oak Grove..we've stayed there several times...during winter months..call ahead for reservations.
sites are clean and level, pads hardened...surrounding area view is OK...not many trees on sites...easy to drive in and out...main roads on camp-site hard gravel.

Bob,
Please give us feedback on what you thought. We use Oak Grove quite frequently, primarily for the museum and the Cubi Point Grill (my days from the PI need renewal every so often).

great campground. we had a premium site backup to the dunes and the water, even though they are all close to the beach. HOST is super. you really have 3 choices here, the overflow near the gold course, E/W/S and nothing else, or go to Corry station. nice sites but the location is isolated.
