As some of you know along with being a RV'r and riding a motorcycle I am also a Patriot Guard Rider. One of the riders posted this on the web site and I wanted to pass it along for all of you so the next time your a a parade, or a sporting event or you happen to wittness the Guard go by escorting a Hero to his final resting place , be proud.

Finally someone has come up with a solution to the problem of how do I handle this issue correctly. This issue has been recognized and solved. We as Vets really have already solved the issue in our minds but it is nice to see the Senator from Oklahoma has addressed the dilemma of how do we render our respect for "Ole Glory". There will be vets all over the country now that feel comfortable doing what they always wanted to do but felt strange in public. We earned the right to salute our flag. By God if I am to buried under the flag the least I can do is stand tall and salute it while I still can stand. I personally want to thank Senator Inhofe for his respect for me and all other Vets from all services past and present.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today praised the passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag. Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether they can or should salute the flag.

"The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's military service," Senator Inhofe said. "Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform.

"Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag. My legislation will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and servicemen alike to salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not".

"I look forward to seeing those who have served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades, and formal events. I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the 25 million veterans in the United States who have served in the military and remain as role models to others citizens. Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others".

Jim, thanks for the post and heads up. I always felt strange putting my hand over my heart instead of saluting properly. Either way I love my country and corps and will always show my respect and appreciation.

It's not law yet. It only passed the Senate. It still has to be passed by the House and signed by the President.

We buried my dad last month. He was in the CG and operated the first of the landing craft at Guadalcanal. At his funeral service during the playing of the Battle Hymn of The Republic and later the playing of Taps at the gravesite I and my other veteran relatives stood and PROUDLY SALUTED MY DAD BECAUSE IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

Can't imagine what the response would be if the House didn't pass it. I'm confident the President will.

My Dad always saluted the flag at ceremonies and such occasions. He taught me and my brother to honor the flag and to never disrespect it.

He was on DE anchored in Pearl when it was attacked. The ship was later torpedoed about a year before the war was over.

Since about 1974 I have always saluted when in civilian clothes and wearing a cover (hat to some of you). One day I saluted my CO when I was in civilian cloths and covered. He stopped me and said Gunny, very few people know there is an old Navy regulation on the books that allows a sailor or Marine to salute in civilian clothes when covered." I just smiled. My dad was Navy, WWII. They don't have to pass a law for me to salute. I don't think anyone would ever criticize a veteran for saluting the flag, or a fellow veteran.

They should be more concerned about trinkets and articles of clothing that are predominantly displaying the U.S. Flag. The U.S. Flag code specifically prohibits it, but you don't see anyone getting arrested for wearing a U.S. Flag article of clothing!!!
