Take Control of your VA Claim

Thread Title is from an article in the Nov/Dec 2017 DAV magazine. Basically the VA has introduced a new claim submission option called Decision Ready Claim(DRC).
Basically the DRC allows a veteran with a SERVICE CONNECTED disability to submit a compensation claim for an increase to the current disability evaluation due to the worsening of the condition. To do so the Veteran needs to work with a accredited service rep like DAV to file a VA form 21-0966 to establish a effective date for the claim. This allows time to compile supporting documents to support the claim. Most important is a recent eval by a VA or Civilian Doctor of the current disability.
I did all this in May this year without a accredited rep through the ebenefits.va web site. Not sure if the DRC program applies but I got a approval on my claim in Aug. Received a 20% increase in my old 30% rating. I had a total of a combined disability 80% rating and through this program and the VA math my rating increased to 90%.
Bottom Line is if you have a service connected disability and your condition has worsened you can get an increase in the rating with very little effort.

Good post and info, I`ll help pass it on, it only took me 6 years of the typical bullsh.t to get a low rating. Maybe I`ll start over with this but I don`t know if I have the energy to do it again.

The hardest part of filing a claim on line is coming up with a user name and a password if you have been using the VA for your medical care. After filing you will be required to take a physical evaluation with a VA Doctor for the particular disability you have. Mine was easy since I go to the VA clinic all the time anyway.

Another VA Benefit for service connected and a high rating is the VA will pay you travel pay to and from your home address to the VA Hospital/Clinic you use. There is a minimum distance you must live away from the VA Hosp/Clinic.
Not sure how this would work if you full time.

Well, it would be interesting! I'll ask if I get a chance, though our next stop (Keesler/Biloxi) we'll be a big 1 mile from the VA hospital there. I find my travel pay covers both travel and lunch, as long as you drive something that gets good mileage.

Im currently going through the initial claim process upon retirement. Submitted claim and electronic copy if medical record 21JUN17, completed all medical visits by 15JUL17, retired 01SEP17, submitted DD-214 01SEP17.

Called today, rep stated it is in process, awaiting for agent to pull over medical record. System shows upload of 21JUN17, but they haven't pulled it yet for review. Stated claim had a completion date of AUGUST 2018. DANG!

Don't worry it takes a long time when you initially file. If your claim is approved They will pay back pay from the date of application. Could be a nice big check for a down payment on a new MH!!!

UPDATE to my SCD upon retirement.

"21JUN17, completed all medical visits by 15JUL17, retired 01SEP17, submitted DD-214 01SEP17."

Initially was told 100 days from DD214..on phone, rep stated "should be done by August 2018"..

Well, 10DEC17 (basically exactly 100 days from final paperwork submission..DD-214) received their determination. Very surprised! They did EXACTLY hat they said they would do.

My only complaint is the uncertainty when working through the process as to what the status is. I would check online every couple weeks and there would be NO CHANGE in "case status", and then BOOM.."its done".

Glad it went through pretty smoothly.

My advice for anyone leaving/retiring from the service.. get the claim together and submitted as early as possible BEFORE getting out (180 days I think).

Did you check the box about making an appointment for a physical?
