Texas Veterans and Drivers license changes

Governor signs important Veterans
HB 1514
received this today in my monthly retiree paper

now when you renew or obtain a Texas DL you can request to have VETERAN place don it and it will now serve as proof of service so you do not need to have a dd214 with you

thought i would pass it on

Giving thought to changing my residency back to Texas in about 18 months and that adds fuel to the fire. Got to wait out the tax credit on the house as primary residency before I do anything.

While a nice gesture, I don't see what it does for people like you and I who are military retirees. Does that mean I have to bring my car into the DMV to show my plates? I think I'll stay with just showing my military retired ID card. Still, I do like the idea.

The OP stated that he saw this in his RETIREE newsletter. It followed to me, therefore... Again, I say this is a nice gesture and I'm in favor of it for ALL vets.

You could probably do that, however I think I will just show them a copy of my DD214 as mentioned on the referenced website.

You don't have to. You have a retired ID card, just like me. How many people do you think carry around their 214s with them? I've been amazed at how many men I've spoken with who are vets (not retirees) that have no clue where their 214 or, or some some cases, WHAT it is.

I'm a little surprised that my comment wasn't obviously taken as tongue in cheek.

It's a good feature. i can show my ID card, but now she will be able to show her driver's license for those times she wants a discount. She's a Marine, but not retired. The next time I renew I'll have it put on there also. Consider this, how many LEO's are former veterans. What's the first thing they ask for when they stop you. No, it is not a license to get away with anything, but for an infraction that is very minor, and a discussion following the stop, well it just may let you get away with a warning.

I'm all for it.

oooohh
I just posted it for/as a public awareness info thing
i have a dad, a son and a neighbor whom are veterans....they didn't retire, and LOWES likes to give mil discounts if you can prove your a veteran for one. they do not have any identifying item to state that, so now its easier for them to let folks know they are veterans
i have a va card, as well as a military retired card.
i simply wanted as many veterans as possible here to know that this is out there and may make it easier when you need proof your a veteran on the fly.
as far as a policeman seeing it my DL....he should have already seen my disabled veteran plates.
but many veterans do not have veteran plates, so i guess it would be one more good thing to have.
only place i ever got a warning was in alabama, it seems there if your a veteran, you catch a lot of slack when it comes to speeding tickets, so it helps to advertise so to speak

It was a good post Powerboatr. It brings a good awareness of new happenings in Texas. There may be many other ways to show ones former affiliation with the military, and this is just another one that can be shown by "all" veterans, regardless of their status.

Thanks again for the OP.
