The Big E Decommissioned
I see were the Enterprise was officially decommissioned today, always make me sad to see such a proud ship go. I never served on her but I sure do remember the first time I saw her up close. That big old square Island really stood out. We used to call her the electric carrier. All the Carriers I served on are gone now but the newer boats are so much more suited for the job now.

A great ship. The Big "E" was my first Duty Station (Dec 65-Mar 68), after A & C schools.
My introduction to the real Navy, being highlined from the USS Neches into the hanger bay, 2330 and darken ship, in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Transferred to Yokosuka 2 months after we left the Sea of Japan when the USS Pueblo was captured.
Many fond memories.

I got my first night carrier landings on Enterprise. Still a few carriers left I served on - others are decommissioned or a museum (USS Midway). Lots of memories.......

My sister served on this ship and I was able to tour it when she retired a few years back.
Thank you so much to all who serve.

Thanks to ALL that Serve. I grew up a Navy Brat. My Dad was an engineering officer on the Old Enterprise. A Mustang who enlisted in 1930 and retired a LCDR in 1958.
Headed to Fredericksburg, to the Museum of the Pacific in 2 weeks with a group of Winter Texans.

The National Museum of The Pacific War is one GREAT place!! Toured through there a few years ago and it is one of the best military museums I've been through. Lots to see, many artifacts displayed in period settings. At the time we were camped in San Antonio and Fredericksburg was less than an hour away. No camera flashes are allowed which makes photography a bit difficult.
RE: The Big E was only 6 years old when I reported on board the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42. She was the second of the 3 Midway Class carriers built. Worked in OI Division/CIC.
Enjoy your visit,
Dan

Progress, I guess. What a great ship.
My only memory of the USS Enterprise somewhat emphasizes how things have changed since 911.
I was in training for my civilian job at the US Coast Guard Training Center at Yorktown back in the late 90s/early 2000s. DW and I decided to drive down to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg over the weekend. We stopped at the Naval base in Norfolk, and I thought it would be cool to show her some big ships compared to the little boats at Yorktown -LOL.
We drove on the navy base without being stopped, meandered around until I happened along the water front. Next thing I knew, my car was parked within feet of the USS Enterprise at the docks. I couldn't believe how close we were.
That is one big ship! We definitely looked up at her.
Sorry to see her go.
My bet is that something like that couldn't happen these days.

My DDG spent some time "plane guarding" for the Connie back in 72 or 73.
Never did see the the Big E, but the name has been part of the Navy for a long time. It would be great if one of the new carriers coming down the line would take the name again.

I am happy to say the Enterprise shall return as CVN 80.
"On 1 December 2012, during the presentation of a pre-recorded speech at the inactivation ceremony for USS Enterprise (CVN-65), U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that CVN-80 would be named Enterprise. She will be the ninth ship and the third aircraft carrier in the history of the United States Navy to bear the name. CVN-80 will also be the first American supercarrier since America was commissioned in 1966 not to be named in honor of a person."
If I was a lot younger I would re-enlist just to serve onboard the new Enterprise. The history behind that name is something.

Spent a few months 'plane guarding' for the BIG E in 1972/73........Linebacker I Ops
Actually we spent a lot of time trying to catch up/stay with group.
Poor old DDG just didn't have the 'ump' to go faster than 23 knots........keel was bent and we 'crabbed' sideways thru the water.
FUN times in engineering
High School buddy served aboard the Big E.
We were suppose to go in together.....night before we were to leave to go to Denver for induction he busted his right foot/ankle.
Never saw him again.....I got out/he stayed in
Thanks to all that served
Welcome Home!
