There Are No More

The last of the Doolittle Raiders has left us. He passed on 4/9/19
Retired Lt. Col. Dick Cole, the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders who rallied the nation’s spirit during the darkest days of World War II, has passed away.

Tom Casey, president of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Association, confirmed to Air Force Times that Cole died Tuesday morning in San Antonio. His daughter, Cindy Cole Chal, and son, Richard Cole, were by his side, Casey said

So they've turned over the last goblet. RIP.

I had the honor of attending a diner after an airshow back in the early '90's. The Doolittle Raiders were having their reunion there at the same time. We bought a big magnum of wine and we all had a toast.

Also, my Dad retired from the USAF in '72. In '62 he was the commander of the King Salmon (AK) radar site. 4 years ago there was a Doolittle Raid special on tv while I was visiting him.
I asked him if he had ever met Jimmy Doolittle. He said yes, he came up to King Salmon. So I asked if it was for an IG inspection?
He said no, he wanted to go fishing, so I took him fishing!

One day we will not have any of them left and that will be a sad day for this country. I am talking about the "Greatest Generation".
