p.s., forgot to add, you no longer have to go to the Texas DMV office to "renew" your registration, you can do it by Internet. It is $1 more, but worth it. Also you can register 3 months early if you are leaving town and will not be around during your expiration date. Last year I was in California visiting my son and family and used the internet. You can even specify the address you want it sent to. I had bot the MH and TOAD stickers sent to my son's house. Just remember to change the address back to the original after you get the sticker or the renewal notice will go to that same address. You can register your vehicles for up to 3 years.

Happy trails.

Texas DV plates and DL

Just my thoughts and a caution. I have had Texas DV plates for many years. The $3 fee is for one plate and other DV plates are fine but you pay the regular price. I did not get DV plates for my 5er - had not thought about that actually. I might do that - will have to look and see which of my 3 vehicles has the highest reg fee.

The caution: Yes, you can get DL free in Texas if you are 60% or more but be careful. I have heard a few stories of overly curious law enforcement prompting a medical review if you are getting free DL due to a disability - I would rather pay the DL fee than give Texas DOL any reason to suspect my disability causing any driving issues! A medical review would probably not be fun. Maybe be nothing to worry about but who knows. I do take advantage of the free hunting and fishing license.

Thanks. Good tip.

Gary,
I would welcome any medical exam that they would give me. I would bet that above what I have already been diagnosed with they would most likely find something else wrong.

I really have never heard of any effort of TDOT to get a medical exam. Consider all the amputees (God bless them) that can drive. They really deserve the freebees in my opinion. But on the other hand, look at all the disabilities that do not have any apparent visible signs, like diabetes, liver, kidney, prostrate or any other maladies that were caused by Agent Orange. The only thing they need to see is the letter that is sent by the VA identifying a percentage of disability. I feel they would find themselves in a court battle if not taking a medical doctor, or VA, as a reputable means of assigning a disability.

I don't know what the civilian community has to go through for evaluation, but the VA will send an individual to a separate specialist for each claim of disability. They then have a scale to compute and come up with a percentage.

I'll sure find out when my renewal comes up, as it will be the first time I declared disability for a DL.
