USS Fitzgerald DDG-62
What has our navy turned into. there has to be incompetence for this to happen
That said, a billion dollar ship out of commission with such little damage to the cargo ship. I hope we don.t have sea war.

actually the ddgs are all steel, unlike the Ticonderoga class cruiser that were combination of alum and steel. They are also pretty darn quick and maneuverable.
displaces around 9800 tons, pretty lite
compared to a 19,000 ton container ship.
your brandishing navy crew failure, this bothers me as a Sailor.
very little facts have been released about either ships course, speed, weather, etc.
the container ship did reverse course prior to the incident, but no hard facts as to what course or speed.
Please for the souls of the dead, let it rest until we know the facts.
7 sailors lost their lives trapped in the flooded berthing areas. That is no way to perish.

AGREE. As a former Navy black shoe, I for one, await more information that I am sure will come.
So Sad to have seven sailors die in what seems to be a stupid accident.

They are called 'Tin Cans'.............they crush just like one
Here is what my boat looked like after collision with USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) during refueling ----USS Decatur (DD 936) after steering failure/ran up under carriers bow overhang May 1964 (prior to my service aboard her)

I stand corrected. The ACX Crystal: Summer DWT is 39,565 t
She's only was 4 times greater than the DDG.

Sad loss of life.
The CNO himself went to Japan and flew home with them today.
I am almost 100% sure it will be the DDG's fault. The container always has right of way. Size and maneuverability gaurantee that. Something very wrong occured on bridge of the Fitzgerald. You will see.
Unless she was dead in the water and could not comm with the container ship.
I read that the container ship was in auto, no one on the bridge. They hit the ddg, which knocked them off course. Auto put them back on course. Before the crew knew what happened, the ship was back on course and a mile away. Turn manual and returned to the collision site.

Article I seen said Crystal may have been on "auto pilot" at time of collision There was a disparity on the time of occurrence, which puts the Crystal's sharp turn in question as to before or after contact. Appears that the "conspiracy theories" are already flyin. DDG had AIS turned off.
