VA coming after you for money if.......
Be aware the VA is coming after everyone with VA disability ratings over 30% whose maritial/dependant status has changed since they retired. If you did have changes, the VA wasn't connected to DEERS so if you didn't notify the [moderator edit] seperately, they're coming after you for the money since the date of change.
Also, if you have no medical coverage and go to an Emergency room thinking the VA will cover it, they won't unless you've seen a VA doctor in the last 24 months.
So much for the VA serving servicemen eh?

that’s too bad. i guess keeping quiet is a double edged sword. They probably should have told the VA though. Integrity, i’ve not lost mine yet. not saying the OP has lost theirs, just saying. OP could just be putting out info like we’re all trained to do. I wasn’t aware the VA paid for medical care of you didn’t go to the VA. Interesting. My buddy is the Garrison CSM at Fort Lewis. His wife which is also a vet and is high up in the VA. i’ll give them a call and see what she/they think. i’ll post reply when i get word on an update/verify the current information.

Badd andy, You forget the VA's unspoken motto! If we delay their car long enough, they will die and we won't have to pay unapproved benefits!

A friend of mine may have died due to the latter policy. No Insurance, needed emergency kidney care, died from kidney failure waiting for the VA doctor appointment. He was around 40 years old.

I'm healthy, have a job, and pay for Tricare even though I'm registered thru them. I haven't ever communicated with the VA since I retired, and they've never communicated with me since I retired, except for receiving Obama care proof of med coverage the last few years.
Now for the Air Force, yearly they send a status letter with info on what and to where to send any changes in status.

You know your marriage status changed you have an obligation to report it. If you don't then you are accepting money under false pretenses and yes--you have to pay it back. Why would anyone think otherwise?

You are supposed to go to your primary every 12 months for your physical. Skipping this is foolish. This is not a hidden requirement.

The VA takes excellent care of servicemen and women who do the right thing.

As a retiree, I keep both feet in the fire. Even though I have a 70% disability, if I'm not happy with the VA service, I go Medicare/Tricare and on a couple of occasions while living in Vegas, I went to the Nellis ER and got a bad situation address much faster.

I use the VA for check ups, prescriptions and minor issues. For anything serious I will use medicare at Scott and White. I had one experience trying and failing to get the VA to cover an emergency room visit. I contacted a flesh eating bacteria, I could almost see my thumb dissolving. I went to the emergency room Saturday morning at Scott and White and received great treatment. Scott and White billed the VA and the VA rejected the claim because it was NOT LIFE THREATENING. How was I to know it wasn't all I knew was my thumb was being eaten away.

I can have nothing but good to say about Va care her in our area. Have Va clinic 10 miles away and MSP Va hospital 100 miles away. I've used Veterans Choice Program for major surgery. Yes there is 2 months worth of paper work but everything came out perfect and never seen a bill. I've never done emergency service! I'm Pleased

I did go to the VA ebenefits website at the time that has a link to DEERS not knowing it wasn't linked which seems like is it now. I may be wrong as my status has since been updated with all the paperwork I had to do. No where did it then, say that a separate report is required. What they didn't have then, and now has, is a window that shows your status.
My Primary is Tricare.
At no time has the VA reminded me of a yearly physical, has had me setup for a 50yr colonoscopy, a blood test, nor any other contact as Tricare has, until now, going on 19 years.
As of now, nothing they've sent me over this issue has included any medical/benefit info or requirements except coming after me for the money.
I've read everything I can find, and don't see any 12 month physical requirement as I'm sure they would've brought that up.
Oh, BTW I'm not complaining about my issue as it's a bad on me, but it was a warning to others as I know of some other vets are going thru the same issue. We are all Air Force retirees, GS employees, and have been under Tricare the entire time. Trust me, we follow all rules/requirements we are notified of.

Back to original Post..
In 2006 I moved from SoCal to Ohio. My VA regional service center changed from Los Angeles to Cleveland. Cleveland reviewed my records and said I owed the VA $13,000 due to not notifying them of a dependent wife name change in 1992! They said I had to notify them within 90 days of any major life changes. I divorced and remarried all within a 4 month period. Long Story. Anyway I had notified the VA medical system of my situation and the name change of my wife. The VA pension system never got the name change. Had to appeal the $$$ decision all the way to D.C. I got it all straightened out by reading the Federal Laws concerning VA rules and regulations. The Regulations state you must notify the VA of any dependent changes within a reasonable period. Since no specific time frame was in the regulation the VA had to reverse the decision of my owing them $13,000. Back then and still today the VA medical system does not communicate with the VA pension and compensation system on a regular basis. You must keep both informed of any and all life changing things that happen during your lifetime. I would not trust DEERS to notify the VA of any changes and also KEEP COPIES of all communication with the VA pension system.

At least now those changes can be made and seen on ebenefits. My situation started in 2010 so maybe the rules were rewritten thanks to your case. Unlike the IRS, the VA didn't include said rules in their correspondence, they just backdoored me by saying to fill out the forms and return by a certain date. I've got some reading to do.

When you choose to use VA as secondary coverage, it is logical that you have your primary (Tricare) cover those things. I'm not sure why you even bothered with the VA...

So you were not using the VA, then decide to let the VA handle the ER visit? Splitting your health care over multiple providers does require some significant work and planning.
