Well 50-Years ago was 1969, so in June of that year, I recall NEWS reports and TV news blasting away at the WAR being played out in the leaving room. As the year prior was the big tet offense in Vietnam. So the fighting was real, and HIGH School in 1969 was over and the draft was gone. My lottery Number was somewhere in 3000. Many were burning draft cards still and running off to Canada to avoid the FIGHTING. I wanted to JOIN the USMC and become RECON, not force RECON but recon.

My Brother was five years older than me, and MOM made me wait until I talked with him about JOINING so I did. He was discharged from the US Army after his four years of service with a tour in Vietnam and a Bronz Star as Army Intelagents. He, said one thing that stuck with me? Joining is 4-years of your life from 4th grade to 8-grade. WOW, a long time. He said don't just join get something back with your time and investment. Then asking me what do you want to be doing when you get out? Look at doing your service time working on college and education.

So I joined the USAF after some research and found that basic was all part of my College as was Marksmanship and tech school. All in all, I did a few Community colleges and came out of the Military with a new JOB and two years of college under my web belt. I did go to Thailand, Guam, and Korea some PCS and TDY's but I saw no action being on a COMBAT base. Oh, there was before and after but not while I was there. So I saw no action and in 1975 the war was over. I think my brother's investment idea was the best plan for my life at age 18.

50 years ago this month I finished training my replacement helicopter flight engineer/door gunner. He took over my duties and I had about two weeks remaining in country. After a little testy negotiating with my platoon sergeant he informed me that he never wanted to see my face again, and he didn't. I spent my days at the Vung Tau beach till my orders arrived.
