It was the Army Air Corps in June 1947 but in September it became the United States Air Force and my serial number changed from RA to AF. Retired after 20 years and have collected retirement for 44 years as of August lst. I don't recommend or suggest military service, only if you make it a career, live a long time to make it worthwhile.

I served 3 years active Army with one year in Nam as tank crewman. Had a 9 year break in service and then did 24 years full time with the Arizona Air National Guard. Loved every minute of it. So I am now retired military.

USN July 61--July 64 (actually 2 years, 11 months, 24days, an 10 hours) I was on a kiddie cruise (join before 18th birthday get out at or before 21st birthday). I ended up a IC3 and served on 2 WWII class cans, USS Abbott (DD629), and the USS Gaynard (DD702). I got out before Vietnam heated up but we did blockaid duty during the Cuban missle crises. I thank JFK for not letting General Curtis Lemay bomb and invade Cuber.

Those years made me a man. Thank you. Although to this day I still tend to duck when I hear loud noises.

Minnesota Air National Guard (5 years), USAF (1 year Berlin Wall sabre rattling). While in the Guard, we transitioned from P-51's to F-89's to C-97's (Boeing's stratocruisers - civilian B-29's).

U.S Army, Korean Era from November 1954 to November 1956 and then 6, years inactive reserve. Tried to keep me around and teach me how to fly helicopters but I declined. Ft.Ord, Ft Bliss, Camp Stewart, Operation Sagebrush and A.A gunsite at the H.Bomb Plant near Augusta, GA. Discharged from Camp Gordon, GA as closest base near gunsite.

I tried out for the Ft.Ord band but Herb Alpert who did my audition thought I would do better with a rifle than with my horn.

U.S. Air Force, 20 years exactly with the best tour (year) was that in Vietnam serving as Flight Mechanic Flight Examineer with the 361st Tactical Electronics Warfare Squadron at Nha Trang Air Base in 1966/67 where I flew 114 of the 7 hour missions locating "Charlie" for you other folks to come in and take out. During my very early tour, we actually set up the squadron and flew our mission at 1500 feet until our first aircraft was shot down loosing all 7 men then the the altitude was raised to 2,000 feet. I hope that if someone saved your bacon that maybe we had a hand in it.

Since 1997, I have been collecting and preserving the History of this mission on my Web Site "The EC-47 History Site" at: http://www.ec47.com/dir.htm stop by for a visit.

Hope to meet you on the road someday, until then take care.

J.C.
