My husband was an Air Force pilot (F4s, T38s, C141s, T39s) for 20 years including service in Vietnam / Cam Rahn Bay and I did 22 years in personnel and a variety of command jobs. Our careers took us all over the world...we each did our share of time deployed, and of course this is why we have wanderlust....

Naval aviation, maintainer
U.S. Navy. I served thirty years 1957-1987 followed up with civil service also with the navy and involved with aviation. Always wanted the military, growing up in Pennsylvania spent my senior year in high school in the naval reserve, a surface division, went to boot camp twice at Bainbridge, the 2nd time after going regular navy. At that time in my life i was an avid reader of James Mitchener. I was motivated by his "Tales of the South Pacific", and later "The Bridge's at Toko-Ri" and still later "Sayonara". Wanted to see the far east and the Pacific and the Navy didn't let me down. Spent some 24 years in Japan, mixed navy and civil service time retiring from civil service out of Atsugi in 2004. Been around the world including europe, no complaints. I was an airframe guy, Hydraulics, flight controls, etc. Served with fixed wing attack and VAQ outfits mostly. Primary duty station include Miramar, Whidbey Island, and Atsugi. Served with numerous squadrons including VA-65/25/128/52, later VAQ-129/ 131/and 136. Deployed aboard USS Midway, Lexington, Coral Sea, Saratoga, Kitty Hawk, America. Worked the flight deck on all of them. It was the time of my life, beginning when as a 19 year old plane captain standing on Midways flight deck pulling into Tokyo bay. As the early morning fog parted I still recall my first sight of Mount Fuji. 19 years old and goin' somewhere I never been before....and they were payin' me too? Met my Japanese wife in 1961 up at Tachikawa AFB where she worked as a supply clerk. Ran over her new bike with my navy truck. She was pissed! We married in Tokyo in 1963 and 52 years later we're still going strong. Got a daughter living/working in Tokyo these days. So we still get out there from time to time. In my 70's now, but if they called me back I'd be outta here tomorrow!

20 years in the submarine service. Retired FTCS(SS), USN. After so many years on the boats and support ships the space we have in our motorhome is incredible.
