Your Favorite Base FAMCAMP

Like others, I find it kind of hard to nail down the best one(s). Nellis is high on my list, also Whidbey Island, Fort Lewis, Fairchild, Offutt, and a small one, Camp Rilea near Astoria, OR. Lots of other good ones out there.

Even though we are both, long time RVers and residents of Las Vegas, the Fam Camp at Nellis is the only one we've used and have always been pleased with the facility and the staff. Have used it for a shake down trip, a temporary residence while in between the sale and purchase of a home when moving and an occasional "last stop" of a trip to empty and do a final dump and rinse of tanks.

All are good cause the price is better than anything off base/post. Some better than others. When on the road we look for famcamps then fed, state, county parks and there is always a party at walmart when we arrive.

For the most part I would say yes but each Famcamp has a list of their authorized users. Most that I've looked at include 100% DAV but to be safe, call the one you're interested in and ask. There is another website run by a retired Air Force Chap. On his website is a list of all the Famcamps and their authorized users. militarycampgrounds.us

If you have a military or DOD civilian ID card you can use famcamps.

Are there time limits on how long you can stay at a time at Famcamps or are they all different policies?

Check U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks - Home for the particular cg's policies. Each one is different. Some will make reservations - others it's first come.

I too vote for Pelican Roost. A great place to stay.

FYI: Fam Camp is what the US Air Force calls all of their RV parks.

And after staying at 20 such military RV parks all around the country.....unlike the US military, their is nothing uniform about military RV parks. Rates, length of stay, whether or not you can make a reservation, most are on the actual base/post others not.

Always call ahead to get entry info, some are behind a gate that needs a code and if you must pass a guard post, you need to know which gates are open at various times of the day.

Also, if the book says "no reservations" many will give you a reservation anyway.

The only one that I'd likely not want to stay at again would be Jacksonville NAS....jet engine testing till 2:00 one night....oh yeah, I'd probably not go back to Twenty-nine Palms, very dry dusty, like camping in a litter box.

We're going to El Centro NAF this winter, the weather is fabulous and if you go off the base, you can an experience the Blue Angels taking off directly over your head twice a day 6 days a week from mid January to mid March (bring your ear plugs).

Maxwell AFB, Montgomery AL. Reasonable monthly rates, concrete level pad, close to PX/Commissary and 2 18 hole golf courses. Flight ops aren't too bad. Biggest negative is the active TRAIN lines right outside the fence, and they go 24/7!!!

This is all I have used, and have no problems whatever
