Just wondering if anyone here has this breed. We brought our new M.S puppy this weekend (posted a picture on photo thread). I've read that they are good traveling dogs and I am excited about the idea of bringing her with us next camping season.
We have about 3 months before our next trip and I am hoping to have her housebroken by then and able to trust her not to destroy the motorhome (we will be bringing her crate with us). We also travel with our soft coated wheaten terrier who is a good traveler (though he is a big scaredy dog).

Yep, we know miniature schnauzers pretty well since we have had them for about 37 years now. We are on #3 (14.5 year old black and silver male) and #4 (5 year old light salt and pepper female). Truly great little dogs, smart (too smart for their own good) and very good watch dogs. They can tend to get a bit barky at times.
Our daughter also has 2 and some friends, the whole family has them.
Love the fact that they do not shed or have a doggie odor.
She will be a model puppy up to about 12 to 15 months and themit is like the treeible twos for kids. She will get into more stuff and misbehave. After about 3 to 6 months, she will go back to a normal behavior.
I'd get her a crate and crate train her for the motorhome and use it up until she is about two years old.

Mitzi has the WORST gas and she has skunk like breath. We are slowing changing her from the food the breeder was giving her to Nutro, per vet recommendation. I am hoping once she is switched all the way over she won't be so smelly, lol !!
She has a crate, though she hates it. She sleeps in there at night, right next to Finnegans crate. Finn is 3 and we still take his crate camping with us. We leave the crate door open here at home and he goes in there on his own for naps...he feels safe in there.

We, too, just got adopted a miniature schnauzer. She is almost 3 months old so a lot of the really little puppy stuff has been taken care of. We plan on having her travel in a crate in both the motor home and car/truck for longer trips. Right now, I take her for daily rides so she gets used to being in a vehicle. We find her to be a very entertaining and enjoyable little companion.

Congrats on the new baby! Good call on switching the food, they really shouldn't have too much gas... I bet the food change will help. No M.S.'s for us (but I love all dogs)... you'll see our crew in my signature. Have fun!

Dittos on the crate training - our 25# black "minature" Schnauzer at 10 yrs. old is spoiled rotten. Wouldn't part with him for the world but he and ourselves would be much better off if we had "crate trained" him and introduced him to other dogs early-on so he'd get along better.

Socializing the puppy with other dogs as well as humans is a very important part of training the dog. Without this socialization, the dog is not taught the proper responses when with dogs or people.

We have had M.S. from the time we were married in 1963. Our current is a salt and pepper female and is 13 years old still acts like a puppy. She is a Therapy dog, we take her into hospital, nursing homes. She has had some health problems in the last year. Last Jan. she had a stroke, but is doing well on meds. M.S.'s are subject to crystals in the urine, she has had them in the past. The vet has her on Science Diet CD. The only draw back is that you have to get the food from a vet. This one is probable the best trained that we have ever had.
