Blind Pets and Stairwells

Ann n I have 3 dogs...Dodger, Mazie and Bailey. Bailey is fully blind and Mazie is shadow blind. Dodger and Mazie are a ‘bonded pair’.
Our biggest problem is...when inside the RV...both Mazie and Bailey have fallen into the stairwell of the house door. Especially when it’s closed they’ll tumble to the bottom and then find it difficult to get back up the stairs.
Has anyone else had this problem? How’d you solve it?
My thought is to create a cover of sorts that can be placed over the stairwell. Make it out of 1/2” or 3/4” plywood or particle board. Make it in such a way that it doesn’t shift on the well and can be installed/ removed easily. And can be used both when we’re in the RV or if Ann n I have stepped out for a time.
Has anyone done this? Care to share ideas/designs?

Our Maggie became totally blind. We used a “baby gate” between the front chairs. It didn’t need to be fastened to anything as she would walk into it and then turn away. We just leaned it by the chairs.

Thanks for the idea. Does this limit Maggie from ‘running’ the length of the RV? Our Bailey and Mazie love to follow us throughout the RV. The only problem they have is the stairwell. You’d figure that with how well they go around furniture and such, they’d remember where the stairwell is!!
