Class A DP - On the Road with a Greyhound

Our rescued racer Zephyr loves to go camping in our TT, and travels great in the back of our Sequoia with the middle seats tumbled and the third row removed.

We are about to commit motor home (a well-known victimless financial crime), and wonder about letting her have free run of the coach when we are on the road. We have friends who always crate their two smaller dogs when underway, but they also crate at night when they are home. Since our girl spent the first four years of her life mostly cooped up in a kennel, I am loathe to put her in one now.

Any comments about the safety (to humans and pets) of traveling with a large breed dog that is unconstrained?

Our Cooper is a Havanese and we have a safety harness that we clip into one of the seat belts in the couch. There is about 4' of leash to give him some room to move. He's happy with it and so are we.

See if you can borrow a crate and see how Zepher reacts too it. Don't force her in to it. Just place it with the door open for a few days. She might actually prefer a crate.

Our ex-racers actually preferred them. Whenever it got noisy, or they were uncomfortable, they went to their crates on their own. It was, to them their "safe" spot.

A crate is not necessarily a bad thing.

We have an Old English Sheepdog and we also use a seat belt harness. It works great and she has enough room to move around on the couch or move to the floor.

In the event of a collision or sudden evasive manoevre an unrestrained dog will become an out of control missile. A crate would be best, a harness with a leash long enough to allow her to stand up and move a short distance would also work.
