Dealing with escape artists for cats...

We've been full-timing with our four cats for a few months now. We're a couple months away from our launch date to travel the country, but as the weather gets better my old man cat REALLY wants to go outside. He's 14 and spent most of his life as an indoor/outdoor cat. But he's getting too old to be living that lifestyle regardless of living in an RV.
Since we're planning to be moving around quite a bit for the next year I don't want him to be taking off outside when we're about to pull anchor and head to a new town.
Do you guys have any tips for dealing with this?
We're considering some anti-stress med for when he's extra moody. Maybe getting a big metal dog cage to set up outside so he can hang out outside once in a while.
What do yall think?

Our two cats are indoor only. They have little to no interest with going outside the motorhome. Nevertheless, we ensure they are back away from the door when opening/closing.

Ours are indoors only as well. We are extra careful with the door but we also have them microchipped.

If you decided to use a tether, I would suggest to stay away from the around the neck type.

I tried this with a cat at home once, almost lost her hanging in a tree.

Additionally they are chipped and wear [breakaway] collars with our phone numbers on them. On one we have a 'Tile' attached to his collar - a Bluetooth location finding device.
