Does your dog use puppy pads?

Lily came to live with us just 6 weeks into our fulltime RV life. Being uncertain about where we might be stopping for the night, I trained her to use puppy pads instead of having to go outside after dark. Sadly she will play outside for hours and then go to the pad to pee.

She's only 8# so this is easy, except when the wind blew the pad. But I've fixed that. I made a puppy pad weight out of 3/4” PVC pipe filled with sand. The joints aren’t glued so it will be easy to disassemble if we change pad size. I made a second one for the patio but ran some small screws thru the pipes that protrude about 1/8” to keep it anchored on the mat.

I used pipe left from another project, but this project shouldn’t cost more than $5 each.

I trained our Yorkie Missie to pee on command. I could tell her "pee pee Missie pee" and she would squat. I don't know if she peed every time but she did squat. She passes away 2 months ago of heart failure. I will be getting another Yorkie next year.

Sorry to hear that you lost Missie. That's a clever trick you taught her. Lily is still so hyper I doubt she even hears what I'm saying. Best wishes for the new pup.

Move it to the door, then outside. We trained our old cat this way. We slowly moved the litter box to the patio door, then put it outside the door so he could see it. He would meow to have the door opened. Eventually we just got rid of it after he got used to meowing at the door to go outside to pee. We never did put another litter box inside for his remaining ten years we had him.

I think some of you are missing the point. I want Lily to use the puppy pads. That way I don’t have to take her outside in all sorts of adverse weather or in places I don’t know. As a single female full timer, I’m more comfortable not having to unlock the door after dark. She's a very small dog and makes small deposits on the pee pads.

I was feeling clever about the pad weight I made and thought the idea could help someone else. It keeps the pad in place despite the desert winds blowing in the door.

I guess I’m the only RVer whose dog uses them.

If it works for you, why not. Thanks for sharing. I once trained a Samoyed to pee and poop in a littler box. Was kinda nice when the weather was crappy to be able to open the door to the garage and have her go in the box.

Our little one uses the puppy pads in the tt. Good idea with the weight. We use a clamshell pad keeper from outsmart.

We used the pads in the coach when we are driving for our 2 Havanese. That way we don’t have to worry that they may need to go and we miss the cues. We also use them when we are away for a longer period of time.
