My minpin has to have a shot at least once a month. She doesn't have any problems in the coach, but as soon as she goes out to do her thing she goes to scratching and eyes water...The shot helps quite a bit. How many more days????

Our Westie is allergic to Dust Mites. We need to give him a shot every ten days. These shots really help him. He also needs to be bathed twice a week with RX soap and RX rinse.

Good luck finding a solution to making the dog comfortable

We had our dog tested and he is allergic to everything. Soooo.....we are in the process of trying to boost his immune system with a series of shots. Hopefully will work....seems to be starting to get better. We have changed his diet also. $$$$.
We are hoping this helps cause the poor guy was just miserable.

Our Poodle has allergies, particularly oak tree pollen. When he starts sneezing or having watery eyes, we give him two Benadryls in the morning and two at night. It works well for him. The side issues are that he sleeps quite a lot during allergy season.

All mine are allergic to the pollen and summer season. I haven't had them diagnosed as to what, just that all summer, Katie, Susie and Angie's eyes are runny and I have to keep on top of them or I'll be treating skin scratching (Staph) and eye infections (conjunctivitis). I (well the groomers use my) use the HyLyt Shampoo for 20 years now on the babies...

Amazon.com: DVM Pharmaceuticals HyLyt (efa) Hypoallergenic Shampoo for Dogs: Pet Supplies

Also, the food when they get really itchy in the heat of summer here I will blend some Sensitive Skin in with each kid's food (Katie is on Brain Diet, Spencer & Susie are on Joint Diet, Angie is on Royal Canin Shih Tzu 24)

Science Diet Sensitive Skin For Adult Dogs - Dog - Sale - PetSmart

I know, this is crazy. I have 5 different dog foods going on at any one time...plus I always put some canned Canine Mature Chicken (Hills) in and add water to their meals.

No wonder I'm going crazy!

I know that allergies are one of the most frustrating conditions for pet owners. And it can get expensive. I had a client who had a 160# lab that would occasionally have outbreaks of staph infection that would need to be treated, despite them keeping the allergies under control for the most part. The medication to treat that 'horse' was very expensive! Food trials are very important....remember, no cheating. Thats hard I know, and don't give up too soon. There are often several problems at once, and unfortunately no 'magic pill'. Good luck!

We found a brand at Pets Smart called Natures Recipe, lamb and rice. We are also have started cooking beef roasts and rice for them. Cheaper than dog food.

We had a Dalmatian (RIP) that had allergies. We gave her a prescription antihistamine that the vet prescribed. She did well with that. Our current Lab has epilepsy so takes daily medicine for that. She also has diabetes and get a daily insulin shot. We have to plan ahead when we change locations to insure we have enough medicine for her epilepsy and what the state (we are headed to) laws are for buying insulin. Some require a prescrition, others don't. We purchase the syringes online.

Our Cairn can get a runny nose and watery eyes that really bug him when the pollen is bad (we call it the "green dust days"). Now that we know it after a walk we wipe his off with a damp towel and it makes a huge difference.

Hi!

My bichon is allergic to bee stings and vaccinations. When she was little and went in for her second round of regular vaccines, she had a severe anaphylactic reaction and almost died.

A couple of years later she stepped on a bee and was stung. The anaphylaxis happened again. However, the vet had earlier prescribed an "Epi Pen Jr" after her allergic reaction to the vaccines. The vet said back then that she'd likely have other allergies that have yet to pop up.

So when the anaphylaxis returned with the bee sting, I managed to inject her with the "Epi Pen." That bought enough time to reach the emergency clinic. Benadryl would have been the backup if the "Epi Pen" didn't work.

Other than that, my bichon is thankfully clear of other allergies. I hope the dogs with the everyday allergies are able to find relief. I can imagine the impact it has on quality of life.

We too live in the Northwest and have fought allergies with our dogs constantly. However, with our latest, we've had a different issue - auto immune deficiency. Several specialists gave us no hope other than to keep the dog on steroids the rest of her life. This was 2.5 yrs ago. Seven months ago, after our own search, we put the dog on a raw chicken and vegetable diet. Luckily, there are several good frozen preparations available, although $$ (but cheaper than medicines!). It's recommended for a number of issues, including allergies. Long story short, her blood work returned to normal within a month and we're slowly weaning her off of steroids. She has regained a beautiful coat and incredible energy. The whole theory is that processed dog foods have cooked off the enzymes that are so important to dog's health. Also, no allergy problems this spring. Good luck and tail wagging!
