So the moral of the story is, "Never trust a dog." Or for that matter, any animal. They can bite under the right circumstances.

And that is why we always said "yes" when someone would ask if our dog would bite. But we would add "all dogs will bite under the right circumstances". And yes, they could pet our dog and we would be very careful that they didn't pull her hair or hurt/scare her in any way. Our dogs have all been rescues. I'm sure they had "emotional baggage". Under the right circumstance, I know they would bite or attack. All our dogs were very attached and protective of us. It's just a given.

Just as an aside, the reason tear gas(mace ) doesn't work on dogs is because they don't have tear ducts. Bear spray is pepper spray that shoots out a stream about 15ft, the same distance as Wasp @ Hornet Spray. Normal pepper spray does not shoot that far. I think both the Bear and regular pepper sprays are 17% capsicum. So there is some useless information that is as correct as my pea brain can muster.

I have 110 lb American Bulldog, Zeus is the gentlest dog I've ever encountered. My grandchildren ride him. That being said I don't leave him unattended with them. He has never snapped or bitten any person or animal, but that doesn't mean he couldn't. Dogs need to be socialized early and learn they are to be submissive to any human. Last year at the dog beach in Bonita Springs a Pit attacked him he managed to get away with only a small cut on his ear. The pit owner blamed Zeus because he was sniffing her dog. I had to call the police to have her leash her dog. That is the kind of thing that gives pits a bad name.
