Hi everyone, this is our boy Peabo... yep he's a pit. But someone forgot to tell him. He's the sweetest, most loving guy in the world. Wouldn't hurt a flea... but watch out if you are a squirrel. He loves people and especially well behaved children.. And yes we have been subject to discrimination at parks even though we walk him on a leash always and are in total control of him 100% of the time. The real problem at RV parks are the unruly little vicious ankle biters that owners seem to think are no threat... so they let them run around un-leashed (against most parks rules bye the way)... and they always run up to Peabo and attempt to attack him... not once has he responded in kind but it is so annoying. I just wish parks would wise up about the real threats.... BAD OWNERS... Would love to see that restriction posted on an RV park web site list of restrictions.
Just ramblin'
Ed

Ed,
I agree with you that a number of band breeds have gotten a bad rap due to BAD OWNERS.
When I was operating my Obedience School, I NEVER had problem dogs. I was re-training the owners. My classes were only word of mouth and I would have full classes of Dobes, Rotts, and Shepards. Most were on their last leg. If something drastic did not happen, the dogs were going to be put down. In NO case was it a dog problem, it was the owners and I never lost a dog. The owners could never believe that their "dog" could change so much.
I also show dogs in AKC and UKC. In UKC, Pit's are shown. They are ALL well behaved and there is NO sign of agression between the dogs, while they wait outside of the ring, or between them and the other breeds showing.
This shows that training counts. I will bet you that all the dogs, who you see on the news attacking someone or another dog, are untrained and their owners have no understanding of the difference between a protective instinct and an agressive one. They are night & day different.
Your Peabo looks like a sweetie!

Every owner tells me their dog is harmless. I have been bitten twice without provocation by "harmless" dogs, one requiring medical treatment. I can't distinguish the responsible owners like you from the others on a casual encounter. I keep a wide berth when I meet any dog, and freeze in place if they approach me.
A woman who lived in our neighborhood was killed while jogging on a local trail by a pit bull that had no prior history of aggression. I am sorry, but I will always be wary of dogs.

Two2go,
I'm sorry for your bad experiences with dogs. Yes, I have been bitten, a number of times, it's not fun.
There is one thing that you can do, to feel safer when walking and a strange dog approaches you. Carry mace-- the streaming kind.
When a loose dog approaches you, say NO in a loud, clear voice. Then take your mace and spray it a few feet in front of the dog (most mace will spray out six to ten feet away from you). 99.99% of the time, when the dog gets close to or on your mace 'line' they will stop like they hit a brick wall. Their sensitive noses will NOT like it. Rarely will you ever need to spray them and you can hit them in the chest, if you need to.
When I road worked my Malamutes (me on bike, them on a coupler next to me) we were attacked, by loose dogs, constantly. A Sheriff was the one who told me about the mace. Worked FANTASITC! Never needed to actually hit the dog with it. Just layed a small stream down in front of them.
Worked great, as well, when I was walking my dogs in a park. Even though it is posted that no dogs can be off leash, every time a loose dog would come running to my dogs-- the owner screaming the whole time at the dog and saying the dog was friendly. I never believe that and when they got w/in ten feet of me and my dogs, I would lay down the stream of mace.
If someone would have filmed it, it likely looked rather funny seeing the loose dog running all out for me and my dogs and then 'hit' the invisable mace wall, either skid to a stop and take off running to the owner or making an abrupt turn and head in another direction.
I never, ever walk my dogs any more without my mace. It keeps all party's safe and unharmed.
Sheila

I agree that pet restrictions should be posted on campground websites and equally enforced regardless of breed. Bad owners spoil it for all.

"Mace" is illegal in most countries, so I assume you are referring to mace "the pepper spray." The original Mace was a tear gas.
I have a Husky/Chow mix. She is a sweet girl and loves people. Loves them so much she wants to jump withe her front paws so she can get their attention. I discourage it and I am still training her to "no jump." She is now 2-1/2 years old. We can walk, and I can heel her, I can have her sit, I can have her lay down. She follows those commands very well. At one time, she loved going into doggy parks and playing with other dogs of all varieties. About 1 year ago, one of the "kick" dogs came out of a CG "yard" and nipped at her. Since then, any dog that comes around us is fair game for her. As long as they are on the other side of the street, she is fine, but if they get within her leash area, and I keep a short leash on her when we approach any dog areas, she will get violent at the "attacking" dog.
It's a shame that she does not know, or maybe she does, that the dog coming at her wants to play, but it's not going to happen any more. She is 70 pounds, and built like an Alaskan husky, strong as a bull.
I have no sympathy for any owner who's dog is not leashed or tied up. Any owner walking a dog on a leash and approaching us, I always warn them to not let their dog in Miya's space. If we stop to chat I put Miya down and she will stay there as long as she is not approached by the other dog.

Well I not only tell you my dog is harmless, but I always walk him on a "gentle leader" leash and I always have complete control over him. So you never have to just take my word for it. I know how fearful people can get when they see certain breeds and I don't want my love and enjoyment of my animal to cause that to others. Again, it all goes back to the owners.

Always an interesting and emotional topic. We full time with three dogs; 2 Westies (15lbs) and a Sheltie (22 lbs). Had dogs all my life, from min poodles to Great Danes and love 'em all. I also agree that there are no dogs born bad... only bad owners.
Having said that, I'm afraid I have to join those who don't want to be anywhere around Pit Bulls. I have had the misfortune of seeing pits owned by bad owners at their worse and it is just about the most terrifying thing I ever want to see. So I'm afraid that I am prejudist against the breed. There just might not be a second chance if I trust a dog with a "bad owner".
Like so many things, a few bad apples.....

Sorry, I call it Mace because that is what it used to be sold under. The term, for what you buy now, is Pepper Spray.

Ed, I am sorry, but I have had a bad experience with a pit and I will not be around them and I will not let my dogs be around them. Yes on the ankle bitters though. Their owners generally do not think they will bother anyone and just let them loose. Our dogs are always on a leash.

Your dog does have a gentle and kind look, but just last week, the most gentle and kind dog attacked my dog without provocation that we could tell. Their dog was trying to kill our dog. The owner was shocked and couldn't believe it... YEP!! The sweetest kindest dog DID attack.
My dw was petting a small dog while the owner held him and just that fast, the little dog bit a hole right through her bottom lip.... So don't tell me how the sweetest cutest dog will not bite.
